Anères is a French commune with 174 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Anéresiens and Anéresiennes .

Anères is located approximately 26 kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic province of Nébouzan .

Anères is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Neste is a tributary of the Garonne and crosses the territory of the municipality together with its tributary, the Ruisseau de la Torte, here also called Ruisseau du Vivier, and its tributary, the Ruisseau du Fourquet.

history

There were two periods of particular economic activity in Anères' past. By the end of the 19th century, marble was made by local workers and stone carvers from Bagnères-de-Bigorre. There were two spinning mills for linen and hemp , weaving workshops, before workshops for the manufacture of tricot days were added at the beginning of the 20th century . More than 75 looms were distributed among the residents in the years 1925 to 1930.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Aneras. It probably comes from the Latin Anerias (= The Aner's estate). The nickname of the community is Eths arreborits ( German  the reboiled ) in the sense of "the clever ones ".

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 500 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to a level of around 150, with brief recovery periods up to the 1960s. At the turn of the millennium, there was a brief growth phase that raised the population to a slightly higher level of around 180, which is still held today.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

It houses numerous statues and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Noteworthy is a large 17th century painting depicting the crucifixion of Jesus , a 17th century holy water font and old stained glass windows .

Rock of the Virgin (Le rocher de la Vierge)

The rock with a statue of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus on its top is on the river bank on a stony path. There is still no precise explanation about its origin.

Anères is located in the AOC zones of the Porc noir de Bigorre pig breed and the Jambon noir de Bigorre ham .
