Naoya Kihara ( Japanese 直 哉 木 原 , Kihara Naoya ; born July 23, 1981 in Nayoro , Hokkaidō ) is a professional Japanese poker player .

Personal

Kihara studied physics at Tokyo University and worked as a teacher for some time . He started playing backgammon and became a semi-professional while still a student . Today he still plays backgammon as well as mah-jongg and shogi in addition to poker . Kihara lives in Tokyo.

Poker career

Kihara plays at the online poker room PokerStars under the nickname nkeyno . On September 21, 2012, he became the first Japanese player to join Team PokerStars , where he was active until 2016. Since 2010 Kihara can also be seen at renowned live tournaments .

In July 2011 , he cashed for the first time at the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and finished in 653rd place, worth almost 20,000 US dollars . The following year he won at the 2012 WSOP tournament of the variant PLO , which is more than $ 500,000 prize money and the first Japanese to a bracelet . At the end of February 2013, Kihara reached the final table at the Main Event of the World Poker Tour in Los Angeles and received almost $ 100,000 for his ninth place.
