Strong Ukraine ( Ukrainian Сильна Україна / Sylna Ukrajina ; Russian Сильная Украина ), formerly Labor Party of Ukraine (Ukrainian Трудова партія України / Trudowa partija Ukrajiny. ) Is a social-democratic party in the Ukraine . It was represented in the Ukrainian parliament through its membership in the Lytwyn block and joined forces with the Party of Regions in early 2012 . In April 2014, the party was revived after the expulsion of its central figure Serhiy Tihipko from the Party of Regions.

history

The party was founded as the Labor Party of Ukraine in 1999 in Kiev . 30 members of the national parliament were involved in the establishment. Mikhail Sirota became the first chairman. In 2006 the party missed entry into parliament. She then joined the Lytwyn block alliance in 2007 under the leadership of Volodymyr Lytwyn . Through the alliance, she managed to return. Since 2009 the party has been led by entrepreneur and politician Serhiy Tihipko and renamed “Strong Ukraine”. In March 2012, Strong Ukraine finally merged with the ruling party , the Party of Regions . Tihipko was then elected vice chairman of the Party of Regions. After his expulsion from the party in April 2014 due to his collaboration with the ousted President Viktor Yanukovych , Strong Ukraine was revived by him and won a seat in the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2014 .

Political orientation and importance

The party saw itself in the tradition of social democracy and, after presenting itself, saw itself as its only legitimate representative in Ukraine. Other parties there still make this claim today: the SDPU (no longer in parliament since 2006), the former USDP (no longer in parliament since 2012) and the Socialist Party of Ukraine (no longer in parliament since 2007). The TPU, which was also known as the Labor Party , tried to differentiate itself from these by stating that it was the only one to represent the interests of the working population and not of big business. With this, she alluded to the links between the SDPU and eastern Ukrainian oligarchs and the USDP and the Tymoshenko government.

In the Socialist International , Ukraine was only represented by the SDPU, even during the existence of the TPU.
