Federal Ecodesign Award

The Federal Ecodesign Award is given to pioneers in the field of ecological design. It was launched in 2012 by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and is organized by the International Design Center Berlin .

The initiators want to bring about changes in development and production as well as in consumer behavior that contribute to relieving the burden on the environment. The prize is awarded in the product, service, concept and young talent categories.

The award-worthiness of the applications is assessed in a multi-stage process by the UBA, the project advisory board and a jury.

According to its own statements, it is the "highest state award for ecological design in Germany".

Prize winners 2019

The award ceremony took place on November 25, 2019 at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). A total of twelve entries were awarded in the categories of product, concept, service and young talent.

  • Bananatex® | QWSTION: Bananatex® is a technical fabric made from fibers from the banana plant Abacá.
  • VELLO Bike + | VELLO GmbH : VELLO Bike + is a lightweight electric folding bike for urban areas.
  • weber.therm circle | Saint-Gobain Weber GmbH: weber.therm circle is a fully mineral thermal insulation composite system, the components of which can be sorted according to type after dismantling and returned to the raw material cycle.
  • Eve Thermo | Eve Systems : Eve Thermo is a radiator thermostat that intelligently adjusts the room temperature to the individual daily routine.
  • Wikkelhouse | Wikkelhouse BV: The most important building material for the Wikkelhouse is corrugated cardboard. It is wrapped around a mold in 24 layers and glued. The concept allows three different modules to be individually combined into buildings.
  • WormUp_HOME | WormUp GmbH : WormUp_HOME is an elegant worm composter arranged in floors, which was designed for urban city apartments.

  • WOODSCRAPER | Partner and partner architects: WOODSCRAPER are circular and resource-positive high-rise buildings. Their modular elements consist primarily of renewable raw materials such as wood and straw.

The Shift6m offers a modular structure, easy repairability and a return system for old devices. This takes into account all aspects of ecological product design.
  • VELOGICAL engineering GmbH VELOSPEEDER
The Velospeeder enables conventional bicycles to be retrofitted with an electric drive. This is how a fully-fledged e-bike is created that conserves resources .

  • Magnic Innovations GmbH & Co. KG Magnic Microlights
The use of neodymium magnets makes it possible to integrate a generator and an LED light into a bicycle brake block. Very efficient bicycle lighting is produced with just a few components.

  • Refill Germany Refill
The voluntary project Refill Germany stands for a very simple and convincing idea: Avoid the consumption of water from plastic bottles by having a drinking bottle you have brought with you filled with tap water free of charge in many places.

With M-Frame, the door frame is expanded to become a module interface. This can easily be retrofitted in existing buildings and offers a lot of flexibility with regard to the modules to be attached, such as sockets, door openers or light switches.
  • Kunsthochschule Kassel (Lea Schücking): Shards
Bricks and glass made from rubble are crushed, mixed and finally fired into new tiles for shards. For this process, in which unique tiles are created, a new product is created from waste with little expenditure of energy.
  • University of the Arts Berlin: URBAN TERRAZZO - TFOB / They Feed Off Buildings
Urban Terrazzo is also made from rubble. The aggregates of the terrazzo panels come from demolished parts of the building and are used for a new life cycle. This builds a bridge from the past to the future.

Award winner 2017

The award was given on November 27, 2017 at the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin. The prizes were awarded for innovative products, services and concepts in the fields of architecture, product design, fashion, repair and food services.

The C1-mini-HC LED spotlight is designed for flexible lighting of showcases in museums, trade fair and shop fitting and can be aligned without tools.
  • Miele & Cie. KG, Gütersloh
The dishwasher G 6000 EcoFlex has a heat accumulator, which contributes to a significant reduction in energy consumption. The materials used are highly recyclable, composites are avoided as far as possible.
  • Natascha von Hirschhausen, Berlin
The designer uses exclusively IVN Best and GOTS certified materials for her fashion collection "Natascha von Hirschhausen - Design.Mode.Ethik", plastic is avoided in all components. The clothes are produced locally in Berlin and are made to order. This avoids transport routes and overproduction. Special cutting techniques also reduce waste to just one percent.

On kaputt.de you can search for self-repair and third-party repair solutions for defective electrical devices (currently: smartphones, fully automatic coffee machines). Using user-generated parameters, the online comparison portal recommends repair videos and spare parts dealers, local repairers and alternatives to repairs, such as buying, renting, selling or recycling a device. The repair recommendations help to extend the lifespan and useful life of electrical appliances and offer alternatives to buying new.
  • Too Good To Go GmbH, Berlin
"Too Good To Go" is a food rescue app. It enables gastronomic businesses to sell leftover food to people who collect them themselves at a discounted price. Restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and hotels do not have to dispose of food that is still good as food waste. As of March 2019, the app is available in nine countries (Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain). Five more countries have since been added and the company has received the Benefit Corporation certificate. In early 2020, more than one meal per second was saved from waste.

The “building botany” approach combines biological and constructive principles into an architectural concept. Trees are connected with technical construction elements. Living structures are created with increasing size and stability of the plants. Auxiliary structures that were initially necessary can then be dismantled.
  • Design for Circularity, Ina Budde, Berlin
The fashion collection “DfC x JNJ” offers the design geared towards recyclability and the underlying EXTENDED CLOSED LOOP model. The aim is better networking within the fashion industry as well as the expansion of return structures and offers for multiple use. Each item of clothing in the collection has a scannable label a. makes the material composition visible for customers and recycling companies and informs about leasing and return options.

Award winner 2015

On November 23, 2015, products and concepts for promoting the circular economy and in the areas of fashion, mobility and logistics as well as nutrition were awarded.

The excellent functional underwear consists almost exclusively of merino wool and silk. Environmentally harmful substances and manufacturing processes are avoided.
  • hinterher.com, Munich
A bicycle trailer can be converted into a handcart, travel trolley, hand truck and a shopping helper. Its purpose is to support the shift in traffic from cars to bicycles.
  • Max Wesle, Sunlumo Technology GmbH, Perg (Austria)
Solar heat can be obtained with a solar collector . It is made of plastic and, due to its low production costs, could also be of interest to emerging and developing countries .
  • Friday lab.ag, Zurich
Clothing and bags made of hemp and flax that have a better ecological balance than cotton in terms of water consumption and transport routes .
Used automobile parts are collected, processed and reused.
  • U1 cycle track, Berlin
A nine-kilometer-long covered cycle path could be laid from the Zoo station to the Warsaw Bridge.
A malleable mass is made from insects , which can be processed into familiar food shapes using a 3D food printer.

2014 award winners

  • Heller-Leder GmbH & Co. KG, Hehlen
Upholstery leather is tanned with olive leaves according to the Blue Angel standards. The leaves were previously burned after the harvest.
  • E-Force One AG, Beckenried (Switzerland)
An 18 t electric truck is quieter and uses only 1/3 of the energy of conventional diesel trucks.
Transparent containers are made from approx. 40 percent PET plastic from the Green Dot collection. The project is designed as an open innovation initiative, which means that market participants can also participate.
In the manufacture of spectacle lenses, an ecologically harmless adhesive is used to connect spectacle lens blanks to the material carrier. This allows heavy metals and rare earths to be avoided.

In contrast to energy-saving lamps, an LED light bulb emits warm light. It lasts 10 times longer than the old light bulb and can be used in classic luminaires, which means that there is no need to buy a new one.

Process for the protection of habitats threatened by erosion. The compostable modules used for this are made from waste materials such as straw, manure, hair and leaves and replace concrete blocks that were previously used for embankment reinforcements.
An inkjet printer was designed with technical and optical durability in mind. With interchangeable components and few moving parts, it makes repairs and upgrades easier .

A wood-burning stove achieves very good combustion values with a bi-metal control. The air supply and automatic switchover to activate post-combustion are controlled automatically. The manufacturer guarantees a lifelong supply of spare parts.
A hammer drill is the only one of its kind to be produced using cold forming .

With an industrially prefabricated wood hybrid construction system for buildings with up to 30 floors, up to 90% CO 2 can be saved. Concrete is only partially used.
The Inspiro metro platform is lightweight and environmentally friendly.

Hand-knotted high-pile carpets made from leftovers.
Electric drive for commercial vehicles that is built into the wheel hub and does not require a gearbox or differential .
A solar kiosk is an independent source of energy for the rural population of developing countries . Customers can charge their cell phones , listen to the radio, cool medicines and buy solar lamps at the kiosk so that they do not have to use kerosene lamps or diesel generators to have light at night.
A wind turbine produces electricity to power a laptop, cell phone and a lamp. The curved Darrieus rotor is the size of an umbrella and is easy to transport.
Instead of separating energy and climate issues into a second work step when planning buildings, an integrated planning is sought with a design program.

While a central circulation pump normally provides the heating water pressure, decentralized pumps are used that supply each radiator with heat separately. This means that 20% less heating energy and 50% less electricity are used.
The plaster of the thermal insulation composite system is the only one with the Blue Angel and does not use biocides .
