history

First design drawing of an external rotor motor

In 1897 Emil Ziehl designed and built the first external rotor motor . With this product and numerous other new electrotechnical devices (e.g. a gimbal-mounted gyro compass ), all of which he had patented and were able to sell, Ziehl had accumulated sufficient capital. He founded the Ziehl-Abegg Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft mbH on January 2 or June 1910 together with the Swiss engineer Eduard Abegg. The company headquarters was moved to the Roland works in Weißensee , An der Industriebahn 12-18, which Ziehl had bought . The rural community of Weißensee became part of the Berlin district of Weißensee in 1920 . Ziehl had high hopes for Abegg, who was to develop wind power plants for the company.

After the company logo (a Blitz-Z on a berg-A) had already been put into circulation, it turned out that Abegg could not raise the promised financial means and that the wind motor patent that was brought in was also unsuitable. Abegg therefore left the company again in the same year.

Emil Ziehl initially designed a girl with a cat to decorate the clinker brick facade of the production building. However, he replaced this advertising image with a representation of a large electric motor in front of which a dwarf figure stands. This bears clear characteristics of Adolph Menzel , which is why a local history association identified it. It is a plastic and painted representation in a window above the building entrance.

After Emil Ziehl died in 1939, the sons took over the factory. Towards the end of the Second World War , the industrial facilities in Weißensee were bombed, but the construction drawings for the products were saved and smuggled into West Germany by the sons .

The factories that remained intact were dismantled after the German surrender in 1945 on the orders of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) and brought to the Soviet Union as a reparation payment. In West Germany, the company was rebuilt from 1949 in the Künzelsauer Schlossmühle by the brothers Günther and Heinz Ziehl. The Ziehls had given up the property in Berlin; In the GDR era, a new engine factory was established here.

In 1960, the production of an external rotor motor as a fan drive began in Künzelsau. 1973 marked the beginning of internationalization and in 2001 it was converted into a family-owned stock corporation.

Sales branches exist in Poland, China, Russia, USA, Czech Republic, Sweden, Great Britain, Finland, France, Italy, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Austria, Ukraine, Spain, Benelux, South Africa, Japan, Turkey, India and Brazil.

The founders of several competitors (Gebhardt, ebm-papst , Rosenberg Ventilatoren ) were employed by Ziehl-Abegg before founding their own company. Wilhelm Gebhardt was previously employed in development at Ziehl-Abegg, and Karl Rosenberg was employed in sales at Ziehl-Abegg before founding his own company in 1981.

Products

In ventilation technology, axial and centrifugal fans with a diameter of 190 to 1400 mm as well as motors and control technology adapted to them are manufactured. Examples of the areas of application are u. a. the heating, cooling and clean room technology.

At the end of the 1980s, Ziehl-Abegg was the first company in the world to introduce EC motors (see also brushless DC motor ) into ventilation technology. In the 90s, the rotor blades were sickled and given a bionic profile in 2006 to minimize noise. Ziehl-Abegg (2013) was the first company in the world to develop a bio-fan made of a bio-polymer (castor oil).

In the field of drive technology, electric motors are developed for elevators, medical applications such as computer tomographs and for buses.

Ziehl-Abegg Automotive

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012, the subsidiary presented Ziehl-Abegg Automotive under the name ZAwheel a gearless hub drive for buses and other commercial vehicles with synchronous - external rotor motor . Regular buses equipped with ZAwheel have been in regular service since 2008, including in Apeldoorn ( "The Whisper" ) and Rotterdam ( "eBusz" ). Five public service buses equipped with ZAwheel started in Germany in April 2015 in Münster. The model ZAwheel SM530 with 125 kW has a maximum torque of 6000 Nm. The efficiency is 90 percent. Retrofitting in conventional buses with diesel engines should also be possible. In 2017, the company presented the electric wheel hub drive for the first time with twin tires in two performance levels: one with a maximum torque of 17,500 Nm and once with 9,000 Nm. So far there has only been a single power level with 12,000 Nm. The product portfolio of wheel hub drives, rims and axles was supplemented by the ZAwheel control unit.
