history

19th century

Wilhelm Girardet (I) (1838–1918)
First edition from February 1, 1879
Title from 2014

"The widespread distribution of a political newspaper, which is urgent in almost all circles, is by no means a guarantee that the business advertisements of all conceivable branches contained in it will also come to the attention of the reader."

- Wilhelm Girardet (I) : Gazette for mining, metallurgy and mechanical engineering, February 1, 1879

The growing mechanization of production processes and the associated increase in machines gave the Essen-based book printer and publisher Wilhelm Girardet (I) the idea of publishing an advertisement exclusively for industry in 1879. He founded the Anzeiger für Berg-, Metall- und Maschinenwesen , a magazine that offered advertisements and information on technical products and processes in the field of industrial production. As one of the first specialist magazines in the German-speaking area, the Anzeiger was primarily aimed at manufacturers and buyers of capital goods . The first edition appeared on February 1, 1879 with an initial print run of 3,000 copies. Around ten years later, the circulation had increased more than sixfold.

20th century

In 1906 the founder's son, Wilhelm Girardet (II), took over the management of the company and thus also the management of the display for mining, metallurgy and mechanical engineering . In 1916 he set up a permanent editorial office for the magazine for the first time. Already at this time, special editions for exhibitions and trade fairs were published in addition to the regular issue. With the increasing dominance of the iron and metalworking industry at the beginning of the 20th century, the journal for mining, metallurgy and mechanical engineering turned more and more to machine and machine tool construction. This reorientation led to the name being changed to Anzeiger für Maschinenwesen in 1934 .

The arms industry based in Essen made the city an important military destination for the Allied forces during World War II . Large parts of the Girardet publishing house were also destroyed in one of the numerous bombing raids on the city. Only after a long-term reconstruction and the lifting of the compulsory license for printed products could the display for mechanical engineering appear again in 1949 under its new name Industrieanzeiger .

The German economic miracle of the 1950s gave Girardet Verlag a new boost. In 1965, the publishing house in Essen employed around 2,700 people and had a total of eight rotogravure printing presses, one of the largest printing plants in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Industrieanzeiger developed at this time to a trade journal for the entire technology industry. In addition to the focus on mechanical engineering and iron and metal processing, plastics technology was added as a main focus.

With the triumph of inexpensive offset printing , Girardet Verlag increasingly lost orders in the 1970s. Parts of the plant were shut down and workers made redundant. In 1988 the company, which at that time still employed 750 people, filed for bankruptcy. In contrast, the Industrieanzeiger was taken over by the Konradin media group from Leinfelden-Echterdingen from Girardet Verlag in 1983. The direction of the scoreboard as a polytechnical trade journal that appears twice a week was initially retained.

With around 61,000 copies per issue, the Industrieanzeiger achieved one of the highest levels of circulation in the field of industrial journals in 1992. At the same time, the publication cycle was changed from twice to once a week. In 1997, the magazine went online for the first time with its own website.

present

The Industrieanzeiger currently offers regular updates on the topics of business, management, industry, technology and product reports. The decreasing circulation in the field of trade journals has changed the scope and content of the journal. Up-to-date news can be found primarily in the online presence, while the print edition focuses on topical content.
