George Michael Volkoff (born February 23, 1914 in Moscow , † April 24, 2000 in Vancouver ) was a Canadian physicist.

Together with J. Robert Oppenheimer , he predicted the existence of neutron stars in 1939 before they were discovered. In the context of this work he also described an upper limit for the mass of stellar objects that consist of degenerate neutron matter (neutron star) ( Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit ). It is an analogue of the Chandrasekhar limit for white dwarfs .

Volkoff was a professor at the University of British Columbia . In 1957 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
