The International Design Center Berlin e. V. (IDZ) is one of the oldest design centers in Germany. With projects, research assignments and events, the IDZ forms an interface between design and business with the aim of researching, publishing and promoting theoretical and practical aspects of design on a national and international level.

history

At the end of the 1960s, Berlin's business community suggested founding a circle in which international forces from business, culture and science should meet in order to create a forum for the promotion of good design. Initiated by the design group of the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) and sponsored by the then Minister of Economics, Karl Schiller , personalities from culture, business and politics agreed in 1968 on an association's statutes in which the influence of the public and consumers was laid down.

On December 10, 1968 the association Internationales Design Zentrum Berlin eV was founded; On April 17, 1970, the IDZ Berlin was opened in Budapester Strasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg . The opening exhibitions were dedicated to the topics "Design - Environment is being questioned" and "Design - Producers evaluate their product". In 1975 the decision was made to move to Ansbacher Strasse, where the premises offered better conditions for the content of the work. The new rooms offered more space for permanent services for those interested in design (documentation, advice, seminars).

Ettore Sottsass and Fritz Bornemann took on the design for the expansion of the center , who visualized the idea of a design workshop in their architectural concept. After a four-year stopover in Wielandstrasse, the IDZ moved again in 1988: On Kurfürstendamm there was enough space available for smaller exhibitions, seminars and consultations, and the IDZ library, which was closed in the meantime, was again made accessible to the public. For ten years, the address Kurfürstendamm 66 in City West was a contact point for visitors interested in design.

After the IDZ had received institutional funding from the Senate Department for Economic Affairs since its foundation, public funding was discontinued in 1997. This was taken as the occasion for a new start at a new location in the eastern part of the now reunited Berlin. The IDZ continued its work in the restored historical buildings of the former Narva factory in Berlin-Friedrichshain . Since August 1st, 2005, the IDZ has been located at Reinhardtstrasse 52 in Berlin-Mitte, diagonally across from the Federal Press Conference .

In March 2012, the IDZ moved to the “New Stage” proclaimed by the Senate Department for Urban Development in the former Tempelhof Central Airport. From 2017 to 2019 it resided at Potsdamer Platz. Since October 2019 it has been located at Hagelberger Strasse 52 in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Among other things, the IDZ is the organizer of the German Design Conference and is currently dealing in several exhibitions and publications with future design topics such as universal design or design for everyone as well as sustainable design and design management .
