The Köln International School of Design ( KISD ) is an institution of the TH Köln and offers interdisciplinary, project-oriented study programs in the field of design .
history
With the founding of the TH Köln (as Cologne University of Applied Sciences ) in 1971, the Cologne factory schools , which had existed since 1926, were integrated into the university as the "Art and Design" department. In 1991, the fine arts course was given up and the design course was transferred to the so-called “Cologne Model”, which was primarily characterized by project-oriented teaching and the abolition of traditional subjects and semester structures. For the first time, the diploma course in the design department included subjects such as service design, design management, gender and design, or ecology and design. Diploma courses at the TH Köln have been running out since 2008. New registrations will only be made for the Bachelor and Master courses.
In 2002, as part of an internal university reform, the organization in departments was given up. Since then, the KISD has formed the Faculty of Cultural Studies with the CICS - Institute for Restoration and Conservation Science and the Cologne Game Lab (since 2013).

BA and MA Integrated Design courses
The standard period of study for the Integrated Design bachelor's degree is 7 semesters, and that of the Integrated Design master's degree is 3 semesters.
The curricular modularization allows the students a non-linear, cross-semester, transdisciplinary and project-oriented study, in which the student's design option is in the foreground. The Integrated Design courses can be completed with a “Bachelor of Arts” or “Master of Arts”.
In addition, there is the possibility of master double degree degrees from Tongji University in Shanghai and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
Major in "European Studies in Design"
KISD has been offering the European Bachelor / Master degree program "European Studies in Design" since 1999, a cooperation between seven European universities. As part of a five-year course, students spend two years at two of the European partner universities participating in the program. In the meantime, the program has been transferred as a field of study to the consecutive Bachelor's and Master's degree in Integrated Design. The field of study can be completed with a “Bachelor of Arts” or “Master of Arts”.
MA product design and process development course
This course is carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering of the TH Köln on the Gummersbach campus and is aimed at BA graduates of mechanical engineering, design and industrial engineering courses.
The students are qualified for specialist and management tasks that encompass all fields of product management and the product life cycle. The product design and process development course enables an additional transdisciplinary qualification and can be completed with the degree of a "Master of Science (M.Sc.)".
particularities
Almost a quarter of the students at KISD come from abroad. Projects, seminars and courses as well as lectures are offered almost exclusively in English. As part of the "European Studies in Design" course, an international module with corresponding studies abroad at the partner universities is compulsory, and "Integrated Design" is an option.
KISD cooperates with international and regional companies, institutions and associations. Many of the teaching, research and development projects are carried out in close cooperation with business.
canditature
The application deadline for the "BA Integrated Design" is always April 1st of each year. The course begins once a year in the winter semester.
