The University of Chiba ( Japanese 千葉 大学 , Chiba daigaku ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Inage-ku, Chiba in Chiba Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the five state schools. The five were:

  • Chiba Medical School ( 千葉 医科大学 , Chiba ika daigaku , founded in 1874),
  • the normal school Chiba ( 千葉 師範学校 , Chiba shihan gakkō , founded 1872),
  • the normal youth school Chiba ( 千葉 青年 師範学校 , Chiba his shihan gakkō in Yotsukaidō , founded in 1920),
  • the Tokyo Technical Center ( 東京 工業 専 門 学校 , Tōkyō kōgyō semmon gakkō in Matsudo , founded in 1921), and
  • the agricultural college Chiba ( 千葉 農業 専 門 学校 , Chiba nōgyō semmon gakkō in Matsudo, founded in 1909).

The university initially had five faculties: Liberal Arts , Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Design, and Horticulture . At that time it had six small locations. In 1962 she opened the new main campus (Nishichiba campus).

The story of the three predecessors is as follows:

The main building of the Faculty of Medicine, built in 1936

Chiba Medical School

The medical school was founded in 1874 as Kyōritsu Hospital ( 共 立 病院 ), with the support of the city of Chiba and the nearby villages. In 1876 it became a prefectural hospital and opened a training course in medical education. In 1882 the course for the Chiba Prefectural Medical School ( 県 立 千葉 医 学校 , Kenritsu Chiba igakkō ).

In 1887 the school became the Medical Faculty of the First State Higher Middle School ( 第一 高等 中 学校 医学 部 ), and in 1890 it moved to what is now the Inohana campus. In the same year she opened the Pharmacy Department. In 1894 it was renamed the Medical Faculty of the First State High School ( 第一 高等学校 医学 部 ).

In 1901 the faculty developed into the Chiba Medical School ( 千葉 医学 専 門 学校 , Chiba igaku semmon gakkō ) and then in 1923 into the Chiba Medical School. The main building of the hospital, built in 1936, still serves as the main building of the Faculty of Medicine.

The Tokyo Technical Center

The Tokyo Technical Center was founded in 1921 as a high school for technology and design Tokyo ( 東京 高等 工 芸 学校 , Tōkyō kōtō kōgei gakkō ), a technical school for product design . The school buildings were located next to the Tamachi train station in what is now Minato-ku , Tokyo. In 1944 it was renamed Technikum Tokyo and in May 1945 during the Pacific War it lost the school buildings. After the war it moved to the former campus of the military school in Matsudo in Chiba prefecture, so the technical center was involved in the founding of the University of Chiba in 1949.

The Chiba Agricultural College

The Chiba Agricultural School was founded in 1909 as the Chiba Prefectural Horticultural School ( 千葉 県 立 園 芸 専 門 学校 , Chiba-kenritsu engi semmon gakkō ). In 1929 it became a state technical school and was renamed the Chiba Higher Horticultural School ( 千葉 高等 園 芸 学校 , Chiba kōtō engi gakkō ). It was the first and only state horticultural school in Japan. In 1944 it was renamed the Chiba Agricultural College.
