Georg von Dadelsen

Georg von Dadelsen (born November 17, 1918 in Dresden ; † May 25, 2007 in Tübingen ) was a German musicologist . He was considered a proven Johann Sebastian Bach specialist; he published numerous works and articles about Bach, his family and his environment.

Life

Von Dadelsen received his Abitur at the humanistic grammar school in Berlin-Zehlendorf . After military service and imprisonment, he studied musicology in Kiel from 1946 , at the Humboldt University and at the Free University of Berlin under Walter Gerstenberg, among others . He also took courses in philosophy and German studies. In 1951 he received his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with the thesis: "Old Style and Old Techniques in 19th Century Music".

In 1952 von Dadelsen followed, together with his wife Dorothee , his teacher Gerstenberg as an assistant at the musicological institute of the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . From 1953 to 1959 he directed the University Orchestra of the University of Tübingen. During this time he also worked as a music critic . In 1958 he qualified as a professor at the Philosophical Faculty in Tübingen with the thesis: "Contributions to the chronology of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach ". In 1960 von Dadelsen took over the chair for musicology at the University of Hamburg as a full professor . In 1971 he took over the corresponding Tübingen chair until his retirement in 1983.

On behalf of the Music History Commission , which von Dadelsen was chairman from 1973 to 1988, he headed the series of monuments Das Erbe deutscher Musik from 1959 to 1998 . From 1961 to 1993 Georg von Dadelsen was director of the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen. As chairman of the editorial board, von Dadelsen had a decisive influence on the fortunes of the New Bach Edition 1954–2007 (NBA) in its decisive phase over a period of 32 years.

Von Dadelsen founded the selection edition of ETA Hoffmann's musical works that has been published since 1976 . In addition to the books listed below, von Dadelsen has written numerous articles on music history. Some articles on music in the past and present (1st edition) also come from his pen.

His students include Konrad Küster and Siegfried Schmalzriedt , among others .

Georg von Dadelsen was married to the journalist Dorothee von Dadelsen , the daughter of the scientist Emil Dovifat . The composer Hans-Christian von Dadelsen and the ZDF editor Bernhard von Dadelsen are sons of the couple.
