Johann Sebastian Bach Institute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen was founded in 1951 as the leading editing institute for the New Bach Edition .

The Johann Sebastian Bach Institute Göttingen eV served as the supporting association. Its task was to work with the Leipzig Bach Archive to develop a new edition of all of Johann Sebastian Bach's works that would meet strict scientific requirements and at the same time serve musical practice. A reliable work edition was not available in 1951; In addition, the destruction of the Second World War had led to the awareness that one had to use the preserved sources for a new edition in order to reproduce Bach's work as authentically as possible and thus have it permanently available.

With the completion of the New Bach Edition at the end of 2006, the institute ceased its activities.
