frog design (formerly frogdesign ) is a product design , digital media , software , branding and business strategy company . It was founded in 1969 by Hartmut Esslinger in Altensteig in the Black Forest as "Esslinger Design" and renamed in 1982. FROG is an acronym for "Federal Republic Of Germany".

From the 1980s to 1992 the company was led by Thomas Gerlach . In 1987 Villeroy & Boch launched the “Magnum” collection designed by Frogdesign. This collection consisted of tiles, washstands with drainage hoods, wall-mounted and floor-standing toilet bowls, urinals as well as wall -mounted and floor- standing bidets and was offered in numerous colors.

Today, the company is based in California's Silicon Valley , has more than 1,600 employees worldwide (as of July 2012) and, in addition to San Francisco, has studios in Amsterdam , Austin , Bangalore , Boston , Johannesburg , Kiev , Milan , Munich , New York , Seattle , Shanghai and Vinnytsia . The branch in Taiwan was closed again. Frog design has belonged to the software company Aricent since 2006 , which, according to the company, belongs to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts , Sequoia Capital , The Family Office and Flextronics . In 2010 the German branch moved to Munich.

Frog design had its breakthrough with the design of TVs from Wega (company). Further products were early Apple computers such as the Apple IIc and various models of the Macintosh series as well as the ImageWriter dot matrix printer . Esslinger also designed the NeXT workstations and watches for the Junghans company . Frog design has also redesigned the graphical user interface of the business software of the software company SAP (from version 4.6).
