Green Dot

Logo Green Dot

The Der Grüne Punkt brand , sometimes just called Der Punkt , is protected worldwide and is mainly used in Europe as a financing symbol for participation in dual collection and recycling systems . The pictogram is offered for almost all European dual collection and recycling systems for waste separation , but is only required in a few countries. It is an internationally (worldwide) protected trademark and is processed through licensing .

The pictogram indicates that packaging from a product manufacturer or distributor marked in this way is involved in a dual system and that the manufacturer has taken over the contribution to the financing of the packaging collection and recycling in advance for the packaging. The packaging materials go to the waste collection of the dual systems, which are financed by the participation fees. The participation fees in Germany finance the collection, sorting and recycling by waste disposal companies . In most countries, a private company - or a few - handles the issuing of the licenses and the accounting and distribution of the statutory fees to the disposal companies. The meaning of sales packaging marked with the “Green Dot” for the consumer is therefore: “Can (completely emptied) be disposed of in the separate collection for packaging” - how it is to be separated is, for example, in the waste calendars of the municipalities or on the websites of dual systems.

The pictogram consists of two arrows in different colors intertwined in a circle . The point does not have to be green, in some cases it can simply be adapted to the packaging color in order to save additional costs for additional printing inks .

The system was developed in 1991 by Duales System Deutschland GmbH . Since 1997 it has been regulated in Directive 94/62 / EC . The symbol was designed by Lars Oehlschlaeger , who was based on the symbol for Yin and Yang .

With the entry into force of the current version of the Packaging Ordinance on January 1, 2009, there is no longer any obligation to affix the “Green Dot” registration symbol to registered packaging.

National

Packaging, left labeling with EAN number and barcode (article number), right from top to bottom: PAO symbol "Use 12 months after opening", green point "Dispose of in the trash" and SPI symbol "LDPE" ( polyethylene , therefore to be separated as plastic)

The Switzerland does not use the Green Dot, but in the Swiss Recycling (Association of Swiss recycling organizations) independent characters, some of the standard CEN / CR 14311 are based ( CEN recycling aluminum.svg).
