The period of use (English: period after opening , PAO) indicates how long a cosmetic product can be used after opening without being harmful to the consumer.

For product marking a symbol representing an open cream jar is used, followed by the period. The period is expressed in months (abbreviation M ) and / or years (abbreviation A ).

In the European Community, the obligation to specify the period of use was introduced in 2003 by EC Directive 2003/15 / EC. The symbol was defined in Directive 2003/80 / EC. Cosmetic products with a minimum shelf life of more than 30 months are affected. A best- before date must be specified for products that cannot be kept for longer than two and a half years , cf. the cosmetics directive .

In Germany, the obligation to specify the period of use was implemented in national law by an ordinance of October 6, 2004; she was in § 5 para. 1 sentence 1 no. 2, para. 2 Cosmetics Regulations set. The implementation in Austria took place through the cosmetic labeling regulation amendment 2005; the provisions on the period of use can be found in Section 4 (1) No. 5a of the Cosmetics Labeling Ordinance.

Since July 2013, the provisions of Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 on cosmetic products have applied directly to the labeling , in particular Article 19 thereof with regard to the duration of use.
