In the Salzburg spa garden

The spa garden (rarely also spa park ) in the city of Salzburg is a park-like garden in the Neustadt district (Andräviertel). It connects to the well-known Mirabell Gardens to the north . The English landscape garden is also known for its exotic old trees.

location

The spa park lying already in the New Town is located just north of the yet to Old Town counting Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens. A footpath, the Bernhard-Paumgartner -Weg, runs roughly on the border to the right-hand old town . The path connects Schwarzstrasse as the western boundary with Rainerstrasse as the eastern boundary of the garden. A row of buildings concludes in the north.

History and Buildings

The central rose hill, about 6 m high, dominates the garden . This is the rest of the earth's core of the Mirabell bastion (St. Vitalis bulwark) built in the 17th century, which formed part of the former Lodron town fortifications .

The name of today's garden goes back to the old Kurhaus , which was lavishly opened there on May 3, 1868 as the "Actien-Badehaus". In 1872 the city of Salzburg acquired the house and rebuilt it so that the large Kursaal could be opened here in 1873 , in which later all the great Salzburg balls of the monarchy took place. Destroyed in the Second World War, the city's new, modern congress center is located on the site of the former entrance hall , and the Sheraton Hotel on the site of the Kursaal . At that time, the spa garden was mainly used by the city's numerous spa guests.

Paracelsus monument in the spa garden

The Salzburg panorama, which Johann Michael Sattler had painted together with the landscape painters Friedrich Loos and Johann Josef Schindler from 1826 to 1829, could once be seen in its own small garden building in the spa garden . Around the large circular painting, 26 so-called cosmoramas were exhibited, true-to-life art paintings from all over the world , depicting natural spectacles , urban landscapes, architectural landmarks or exotic scenes. They were painted by Hubert Sattler , who gave the panorama from his father and 119 cosmoramas to the city of Salzburg in 1870. The panorama building was built in 1875 and demolished in 1937 in a dilapidated condition. Today the Sattler Panorama and many cosmorama pictures can be seen in the Panorama Museum next to the Salzburg Museum in the New Residence .

In the area of the former Kurhaus and the associated spa garden, the Kurhaus of the City of Salzburg with the indoor swimming pool (Paracelsusbad) now stands next to the Congress House and the Hotel Sheraton . The marble statue of the famous doctor and philosopher created by Josef Thorak in front of the bath points to Paracelsus .
