Bernhard Paumgartner (born November 14, 1887 in Vienna , † July 27, 1971 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian conductor , composer and musicologist, educator, founding member and president of the Salzburg Festival .

Life

Bernhard Paumgartner was the son of the composer and music writer Hans Paumgartner and the well-known singer Rosa Papier . He studied in Vienna , among others, Bruno Walter , and at the local university , where he graduated in 1911 in Law.

Together with Felix Petyrek , Paumgartner worked during the war years at the Music History Center at the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry . From 1914 to 1917 he directed the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra and in 1917 became director of the Salzburg Mozarteum . There he played a key role in founding the festival and led, among other things, serenade concerts.

As a composer, Bernhard Paumgartner wrote operas , cantatas , songs and choirs . His songs and instrumental chamber music are still played occasionally today. As editor he published Das Taghorn , a collection of works by minstrels , in 1922 . He gave the violin school of Leopold Mozart and works by Monteverdi , Locatelli new challenges and other masters of the 17th and 18th centuries.

He became known as an author through his biographies on Mozart and Bach . His autobiographical memories also attracted attention .

After the annexation of Austria , Paumgartner was relieved of his position as director of the Mozarteum by the National Socialists . Paumgartner spent the war years in Florence as part of a research assignment from the University of Vienna. From 1952 Paumgartner was the founder and director of the Camerata Academica of the Mozarteum Salzburg . In 1953 he co-founded the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen . In 1955 he was the musical director of the Mozart film Don Juan - opera film (directed by Walter Kolm-Veltée ) with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and with a great ballet. From 1960 to 1971 he was President of the Board of Directors of the Salzburg Festival.

With the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Camerata Academica Salzburg , Paumgartner also made a few recordings, mostly with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn . He also worked with famous soloists such as Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil .

Paumgartner's remains rest in a grave of honor in St. Peter's Cemetery in Salzburg.

Bernhard Paumgartner's estate is in the archive of the Research Institute for Salzburg Music History at the Department of Art, Music and Dance Studies at the University of Salzburg . Some of the post-war professional correspondence is in the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Some letters from 1929–1947 are also in the holdings of the Leipzig music publisher CFPeters in the Leipzig State Archives .
