Eberhard Preussner

Eberhard Preussner (born May 22, 1899 in Stolp , Pomerania, † August 15, 1964 in Munich ) was a German music teacher.

Life

Eberhard Preußner was the second of three children from Oskar and Jenny Preußner. He spent his childhood and youth in Szczecin , where his father was the director of the local Bismarck secondary school. Eberhard Preussner attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin. From 1916 to 1918 he served as a soldier in the First World War . After the war, studied at the Berlin Academy of Music and at the University of Berlin , where he in 1924 with a thesis on the methodology in the school song of the Protestant grammar schools of the 17th century Dr. phil. received his doctorate. He devoted himself to music education . In 1928 he became editor of the magazine Die Musik and worked for Leo Kestenberg at the Berlin Central Institute for Education and Teaching until 1934, and from 1930-1944 editor of the music magazine Die Musikpflege .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he was a member of the Reich Chamber of Music until 1945, despite repeated denunciations because of his former collaboration with Kestenberg . In 1939 Preussner went to the Salzburg Mozarteum , where he became a lecturer and managing director and headed the city's concert office. In 1945 he initially worked at the Salzburg Adult Education Center, but continued to teach as a lecturer in music history and music education at the Mozarteum, where he was appointed associate professor in 1949 after assuming Austrian citizenship. In 1959 Preussner became a full professor, president of the Academy for Music and Performing Arts, head of the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg , general secretary of the Association Européenne des Académies, Cons. et conservatoires and editor of the music pedagogical bibliography. In addition to several visiting professorships in the USA, Preussner became a member of the board of directors of the Salzburg Festival in 1960 .

He received numerous awards, such as the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1957 and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1964 .

Preussner was the godfather of cellist Wolfgang Boettcher , who later married his niece Regine Vollmar.
