Günther Bauer (actor)

Günther G. Bauer (born October 12, 1928 in Bregenz ) is a retired university professor for drama at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg , as well as the founder and long-time director of the Institute for Game Research and Game Education (today Institute for Game Research and Playing Arts , Institute for Ludology and Playing Arts) . His work as rector of the Mozarteum University of Music and Performing Arts (later Mozarteum University) extended from 1983 to 1991.

He is an Austrian (Mozart and dwarf) researcher, cultural worker (as an author, actor, director ), cultural manager (as director of the Salzburg children's and youth theater), educator, passionate painter, honorary title holder and chairman; u. a. Until 2011 in the function of General Secretary of the PEN Club Salzburg.

Live and act

Günther G. Bauer is the second son of Emilie Bauer and Andreas Bauer. At the age of four he moved to Salzburg . There he attended the "practice school" and the humanistic high school (Matura 1947). In 1951 he obtained his diploma for acting and directing at the “Mozarteum” academy. This was followed by a degree in theater studies , German and art history in Vienna and Salzburg.

As an actor, assistant director and dramaturge he had engagements at the Salzburg State Theater, two years at the Theater in der Josefstadt Vienna, five years at the Volkstheater Vienna , one year at the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen and thirteen years at the Burgtheater Vienna. In the years 1951–1963 he took part in the Salzburg, Bregenz and Bad Hersfeld festivals.

He worked as a director primarily at the Theater der Jugend in Vienna , at the United Theaters in Graz, at the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen, at the Renaissance Theater in Berlin and in the small comedy in Frankfurt. Since 1960 he has directed numerous directors for ORF . In 1970 he was responsible for a production for the world tour of the Vienna Boys' Choir .

From 1971 he was professor for acting at the "Mozarteum" university. 1972–1976 he had lectureships for school games at the University of Salzburg. In 1978 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil.

1973–1977 and 1979–1983 he was head of department VIII (performing arts), from October 1, 1983 to September 30, 1991 rector of the "Mozarteum" university.

From 1990 he acted as founder and director of the "Institute for Game Research and Game Education" (today Institute for Game Research and Playing Arts / Institute for Ludology and Playing Arts). Since 1980 he has been a founding member and board member and artistic director of the Salzburg children's and youth theater. He directed ten large productions with around 1,400 performances and guest performances in South Tyrol and Bavaria.

As a writer, Günther Georg Bauer worked primarily in the field of plays for children and young people as well as radio plays. Nine children's and youth plays experienced over 800 performances. The majority of these pieces were either taken over by television or newly produced by ORF. He wrote over 200 radio plays for children and young people for the ORF's “Children and Youth Radio” department. Bauer is also the author of libretti, song and choral texts for Cesar Bresgen , Werner Egk and Hermann Thieme. He published a number of articles and research reports on the cultural and art history of baroque Salzburg.
