Klaus Ager

Klaus Ager (born May 10, 1946 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian composer and conductor . In 1975 he founded the Austrian Ensemble for New Music and in 1977 the music festival Aspects Salzburg . For many years he was professor for composition in Bregenz and Salzburg. From 1995 to 2000 he was rector of the Mozarteum . From 2004 to 2014 he was President of the Austrian Composers Association and from 2006 to 2014 of the European Composers' Forum in Brussels. He is one of the leading contemporary composers in Austria.

Life

From 1967 to 1970 Klaus Ager studied piano, violin and composition with Cesar Bresgen , conducting with Gerhard Wimberger at the Mozarteum and musicology with Gerhard Croll at the University of Salzburg . From 1971 to 1973 he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and electroacoustic music with Pierre Schaeffer at the Conservatoire de Paris . He also attended courses in composition, electroacoustics and computer music with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio .

From 1970 to 1971 he was a répétiteur at the Salzburg Festival . In 1973 he was a freelancer for Radio France in Paris and from 1974 to 1978 for ORF in Salzburg. From 1975 to 1986 he directed the Austrian Ensemble for New Music, which he founded . In 1977 he founded the contemporary music festival aspects Salzburg , which celebrated its 30th birthday in 2006 and which he was artistic director. In 1994 he founded the Aspects New Music Ensemble in Salzburg.

From 1973 to 1979 he was assistant at the chair for music theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts “Mozarteum” Salzburg. Stays abroad took him to the electron music studies in Stockholm (1974), the University of California, San Diego (1977) and Colgate University in Hamilton, New York (1979, 1981). In 1979 he became head of the chair for music analysis and from 1986 professor at the Mozarteum Salzburg. From 1991 to 1995 he was deputy rector and from 1995 to 2000 rector there . In addition, he was Professor of Composition at the Bregenz Conservatory from 1981 to 1986.

From 2000 onwards, Klaus Ager has been working as a guest composer and lecturer in South and North America and advocates a better position for composers across Europe. In 2003 he was able to achieve through his commitment to subsidies and innovative articles that the Arovell music magazine was expanded to a color medium with a circulation of 700 copies per quarter. Together with Andor Losonczy , Herbert Grassl and others he publishes Edition 7 in Salzburg.

From 1981 to 1994 he was President of the European Conference of Organizers of New Music. From 2004 to 2014 he was President of the Austrian Composers Association , in this role he initiated a. a. the congress "Composition in Europe of the 21st Century", which took place from February 2nd to 5th, 2006 in the Glass Hall of the Wiener Musikverein and as the most important result of which a network of all European composers' associations is emerging. In 2006 he became President of the European Composers 'Association ECF, the European Composers' Forum in Brussels. In 2007 he was co-founder of the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance , of which he has been Honorary President since 2017. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .

His compositions (including electro-acoustic and computer music) have been performed in North and South America, Australia, Europe, Japan and Korea.
