biography

Dieter Lehnhoff was initially a student of Klaus Ager , Friedrich Heller, Gerhard Wimberger and Josef-Maria Horváth in Salzburg . After studying music at Marroquin University in Guatemala City , he worked as a conductor . He then studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC , with Conrad Bernier and Helmut Braunlich (composition), Donald Thulean (conducting), Ruth Steiner, Cyrilla Barr, Emma Garmendia and Robert M. Stevenson (musicology). Here he completed his master's (MA) and doctorate ( Ph.D. ) with distinction.

Recently called to Guatemala , he founded various academic and musical institutions: the Musicological Institute of Rafael Landívar University, which he has headed as a professor since 1991, and the music department of Del Valle University. As university music director at both universities, he was responsible for the establishment, development and musical direction of orchestras , choirs and chamber music ensembles. In 1996 and 1997 he initiated the national youth orchestra movement with the organization of two international youth orchestra festivals, which he was able to consolidate as a member of the city's cultural committee. He was also chief conductor of the New Philharmonic Orchestra, the Guatemala City Orchestra and the National Choir, with numerous concert series.

His research in the field of older music brought to light numerous forgotten or lost Central American compositions from the Renaissance , Baroque , Classical , Romantic and 20th century , which were presented in concerts and recordings. The Millennium Ensemble and Orchestra, founded for this purpose, under the direction of Lehnhoff, ensured the distribution of the works, often in combination with European works from the same period. Lehnhoff dealt with the same topic in four books published in Spanish, as well as over 200 chapters and articles in specialist journals, international encyclopedias and edited volumes. From 2005 he became a visiting professor at the National University in Costa Rica , where he led doctoral seminars and supervised doctoral theses in musicology. From 2007 he was also the first guest conductor of the newly founded symphony orchestra of the university, with which he performed contemporary works. a. his 1st piano concerto .

His own compositions have been performed in Europe , North and Latin America and Asia . His Misa de San Isidro (2001) for unaccompanied mixed choir, dedicated to and awarded by Pope John Paul II , premiered in Tenerife , ( Canary Islands ) in 2002 and since then at festivals in Medellín ( Colombia ), Tokyo and New York has been performed by various professional choirs. His 1st Piano Concerto (2005), dedicated to the Russian pianist and piano teacher Aleksandr Sklioutovski, was premiered in Guatemala City by José Pablo Quesada (Costa Rica) and the Millennium Orchestra under the direction of the composer. Further performances and concert recordings with the same soloist in Costa Rica (National Theater, 2007), Venezuela (15th Festival for Contemporary Music, Caracas , 2008) and El Salvador (13th Festival for Contemporary Music, 2009) made the work more popular. Lehnhoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, also inspired by Sklioutovski, was first performed in 2008 in the concert hall of the Marroquin University in Guatemala City , with the soloist Sergio Sandi (Costa Rica) and the Leipzig Bach Ensemble with the Millennium Orchestra, conducted by the composer. Both concerts are held in a personal post-modern style , with influences from modern times and the harmonious and rhythmic peculiarities of tango , jazz and blues . Lehnhoff's four Hai-kai for piano, which are dedicated to his former teacher Klaus Ager , are aphoristic pieces in twelve-tone technique that attracted the attention of the Russian music theorist Tamara Sklioutovskaia and are performed internationally. His orchestral, choral and chamber music is heard at numerous international festivals. His stage work Satuyé , about a legend from the Caribbean and with its own libretto in the Garinagu language , is due to be performed soon.
