The Austrian Ensemble for New Music (OENM, proper spelling œnm ) is an ensemble for new and contemporary music based in Salzburg .

history

The Austrian Ensemble for New Music was founded in 1975 by the composer Klaus Ager and the clarinetist Ferenc Tornai. In 1988 Ager handed over the management to the composer and conductor Herbert Grassl, who successfully continued the work and laid important foundations for the future. Since 1997 the Austrian Ensemble for New Music has been able to establish itself as a top international ensemble for new music under the leadership of the first guest conductor Johannes Kalitzke as well as the violinist Frank Stadler and the cellist Peter Sigl.

The ensemble works with young composers with the aim of giving an overview of the latest trends in national and international music and of finding an audience for the compositional work of the region. Approx. 300 works have premiered so far.

The œnm played at the Aspects Festival , the Bologna Festival, the Bregenz Festival , the Dialoge Festival of the International Mozarteum Foundation, the Dresden Days of Contemporary Music, the Weimar Art Festival , the Munich Biennale , Milano Musica, and Traiettorie Parma, Settembre Musica, UltraSchall Berlin, Warsaw Autumn, Theater an der Wien and Wien Modern .

In the 2008/09 season the œnm designed its own cycle that looked at “Salzburg string music” from a “contemporary perspective” and commissioned five composers to do this. These new works integrate the instruments typical of “Salzburg string music” (dulcimer, zither, guitar, folk harp) into the “classical” ensemble line-up and develop a contemporary, contemporary sound from their “folk” sound. The 2010/11 cycle focuses on individual musical personalities of the ensemble with the “fingerprints” and thus offers a particularly interesting and varied program.

At the first Salzburg Biennale in 2009 the œnm played with great success seven concerts on “Beat Furrer and Flamenco Jondo / Cante Jondo”, “Steve Reich and Gamelan Music from Bali”, “Toshio Hosokawa and Music from Japan” and “Klaus Huber and Arab Music “, At the Salzburg Biennale 2011 the ensemble worked with Michael Gielen , Thomas Kessler and Dieter Schnebel and played concerts with conductors such as Johannes Kalitzke, Andrea Pestalozza and José-Maria Sánchez-Verdú.

The œnm's first guest conductor is Johannes Kalitzke , and there are also conductors by Tito Ceccherini , Titus Engel , Beat Furrer , Heinz Holliger , Toshio Hosokawa , Rupert Huber , Franck Ollu , Peter Rundel , Peter Ruzicka , Oswald Sallaberger and Arturo Tamayo .

As part of the œnm. Academies for contemporary music at the Mozarteum University Salzburg , the ensemble is committed to the training and further education of young composers, conductors and performers.

CD recordings and live recordings of the œnm appear on NEOS.

Reviews

"... This ensemble, which has existed since 1975, has developed into a top ensemble of new music, especially in the last ten years, which does not need to hide from the most famous rival associations in Frankfurt or Vienna."
