Arturo Tamayo

Arturo Tamayo (born August 3, 1946 in Madrid ) is a Spanish conductor .

Tamayo studied music at the Conservatory in Madrid, but also law at the Complutense University of Madrid. He then decided to study music and study at the Conservatory and also studied conducting in Basel with Pierre Boulez and in Vienna with Witold Rowicki . Tamayo also studied composition with Klaus Huber and Wolfgang Fortner at the Musikhochschule Freiburg .

From 1979 to 1998 he was professor for 20th century music at the Freiburg University of Music. At the same time he made guest appearances with various major European orchestras, including the Orchester National de France , the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra dell ' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , the radio symphony orchestras of Berlin, Frankfurt, Vienna, Stuttgart and Munich as well as countless other ensembles. He also worked in his homeland, where he conducted a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's seldom played Stiffelio in Madrid in 1995 (with Plácido Domingo and Verónica Villarroel ). Tamayo continued to regularly launch new works, leading the world premiere of Klaus Huber's opera Schwarzerde (1997–2001) at the Basel Opera in November 2001 .

In recent years he has also worked as a professor of conducting and has recorded a number of CDs with works by Bruno Maderna .
