Oswald Sallaberger (born July 3, 1966 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian conductor and violinist.

Life

His love and talent for music was already evident in his childhood. Starting with the flute , he quickly switched to the violin and took lessons at the Innsbruck Conservatory . At the age of 15 he moved to Salzburg to play in the Austrian Youth Philharmonic. At that time he fully experienced the great symphonic music and only through the perception of a full orchestra did the will to become a conductor develop. At 17 he became the first concertmaster in this orchestra, at 18, at the same time as studying at the Mozarteum, he graduated from the Academic Gymnasium Salzburg .

He studied violin with Thomas Zehetmair and Sándor Végh and conducting with Michael Gielen at the Mozarteum and was assistant to Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez . At the age of twenty he undertook his first foreign tour through the USA, during which he was head of the Austrian Chamber Orchestra a. a. performed at Carnegie Hall . He gained further experience working in various opera houses. In 1993 he received the Herbert von Karajan Foundation's Conducting Prize .

In 1993, 1995 and 1999 Sallaberger was invited to the Salzburg Festival as a conductor , where he performed works by Mozart and George Lopez . His interest in contemporary music led him to work closely with composers such as György Kurtág , György Ligeti , Helmut Lachenmann and Luciano Berio . He also performed Matthias Pintscher's Thomas Chatterton in Vienna and two operas by Param Vir in Antwerp.

From 1998 to 2010 he was employed as general music director at the Operá de Rouen . He is chéf fondateur (founding conductor ) of the Orchester de l'Opéra de Rouen .
