Alexander Kukelka

Alexander Kukelka (born December 7, 1963 in Klement , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian composer , conductor and pianist . From 2014 to 2020 he was President of the Austrian Composers Association (ÖKB).

Life

Alexander Kukelka is the son of the restorer of old musical instruments, Peter Kukelka , who taught historical instrument studies and instrument making at the Vienna University of Music from 1972 to 1994 and who supported him musically during school and the painter Helene Kukelka. From 1979 to 1987 he studied jazz piano with Roland Batik at the Vienna Conservatory and harpsichord with Marina Mauriello. From 1982 he studied composition with Kurt Schwertsik and conducting with Uroš Lajovic at the Vienna Music Academy . From 1987 to 1990 he played the piano in the orchestra of the United Theater in Vienna . Since 1990 he has worked as a freelance composer, arranger, pianist and conductor in Vienna.

Kukelka is married to the dramaturge Kathrin Kukelka-Lebisch and has a daughter (* 2004). In 1999 he founded the New Vienna Music Theater Association with Kathrin Kukelka-Lebisch and the librettist Walter Leitner .

Since 2002 Kukelka has been teaching music in film - film music - music film at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . From 2008 he was Vice-President and Chairman of the Film & Media Music Section of the Austrian Composers' Association (ÖKB). In April 2014 he was elected President of the ÖKB. He has been a member of the Federation of Film and Audiovisual Composers in Europe (FFACE) since 2009 .

In addition to film music and operas, Kukelka also composed stage music, especially for pieces by Johann Nestroy , as well as instrumental works.

In May 2019, Kukelka became a member of the newly created five-person composition advisory board of the Culture Department (Magistratsabteilung 7) of the City of Vienna, an expert committee that issues funding recommendations in the field of music composition. In 2020 he was succeeded by Johannes Kretz as President of the Austrian Composers Association.
