Thomas Christian David (born December 22, 1925 in Wels , † January 19, 2006 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer , conductor , choir director and flautist .

Life

David was born in Wels in 1925 as the son of the composer Johann Nepomuk David , who moved with the family to Leipzig in 1934, where he attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig and was a member of the St. Thomas Choir . He then began to study composition, piano and flute at the Leipzig Music Academy , which he continued from 1945 to 1948 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and expanded to include organ, harpsichord and conducting. In 1945 David received a teaching position for flute at the Mozarteum and led the Mozarteum choir.

From 1948 to 1957 he was director of the South German Madrigal Choir and répétiteur at the Stuttgart Opera . From 1957 he taught score playing and composition at the Musikhochschule Vienna , from 1963 also composition, and from 1960 directed the university's chamber choir. From 1967 to 1973 he worked as a professor at the music faculty at the University of Tehran, which he helped to establish . From 1967 to 1973 he was chief conductor of the orchestra of Iranian television NITV and conducted at the Tehran Opera. From 1974 to 1988 he was professor for composition and composition at the Vienna University of Music.

From 1980 to 1995 he was first conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , from 1986 to 1988 President of the Austrian Association of Composers and in 1992 artistic director of the Cairo Opera.

David was buried next to his father in the honorary grave (Group 32C, No. 43) at Vienna's Central Cemetery . His brother Lukas David (* 1934) is a violinist. David was a member of the Lodge Zur Toleranz from 1975 until his cover in 1996 .
