Lukas Florian David (born June 5, 1934 in Wels ) is an Austrian violinist .

Life

Lukas David was born in 1934 as the younger son of the composer and conductor Johann Nepomuk David (1895–1977) and his wife Berta Eybl in Wels, Upper Austria. His older brother was the composer and conductor Thomas Christian David (1925-2006). He received his first violin lessons at the State University for Music in Leipzig. Later he was a student of Max Strub at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Max Kergl at the Stuttgart State University of Music . He made his first public appearance at the age of 14. From 1949 to 1957 he studied in Tibor Varga's master class and was then his assistant at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold until 1959 . He also completed a master class with Nathan Milstein .

As a violinist he found international acclaim, concert tours took him through Europe, Asia, the USA, South America and South Africa. The focus of his work is the romantic and contemporary repertoire, so he also performed several of his father's solo concerts. He organizes the Lukas David Chamber Music Festival annually in the Peruvian capital Lima . In 1958 he received the sponsorship award from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

From 1959 David led a major class at the Vienna Music Academy . From 1966 to 1998 he was a professor at the Detmold University of Music .
