The Brainpool TV GmbH , based in Cologne is a TV film production company for light entertainment in Germany and, through its various investments in the areas of TV production , live concerts and festivals , artist management , production services , marketing and rights management active and young talent.

history

The Brainpool TV GmbH was founded on November 28, 1994 by Jörg Grabosch , Martin Keß and Ralf Günther and from January 1995 produced the RTL night show with Thomas Koschwitz . Further productions followed, mostly for the stations Sat.1 , ProSieben and RTL . Up until the IPO on November 23, 1999 on the Neuer Markt , Brainpool became a partner in several other media companies . In November 2001 the 100 percent takeover by VIVA Media GmbH (at that time VIVA Media AG) became known and in July 2002 the share trading was stopped. Through the takeover of VIVA by the MTV parent company Viacom in 2004, Brainpool belonged to Viacom until December 31, 2006. Since January 1, 2007, Brainpool was independent again. As part of a management buyout , Grabosch and Günther bought back the production company they had founded with the help of private investors. In addition to them, Stefan Raab and Andreas Scheuermann each held a stake of 25 percent. On July 2, 2009, the company announced that the French TV production company Banijay Entertainment was acquiring a 50 percent stake in Brainpool. Banijay Entertainment was founded in 2008 by Stéphane Courbit , ex-boss of the French Endemol subsidiary. Grabosch, Günter, Scheuermann and Raab reduced their stake from 25 percent each to just 12.5 percent each. In December 2011, Brainpool announced a crowdfunding project to finance the first feature film for the TV series Stromberg . For this purpose, the company wanted to collect one million euros by March 2012 and achieved this goal in just one week. In 2011 the company generated sales of 65 million euros and a surplus of almost 13 million euros. In the same year, the Raab TV subsidiary signed a five-year contract worth 185 million euros with ProSieben / Sat1. In June 2015, Brainpool announced a dismissal of 80 employees at the end of 2015 due to Raab's announced withdrawal from the television industry. However, the Cologne labor court regarded some dismissals as unjustified and thus declared ineffective. In March 2018 it was announced that Stefan Raab had sold his remaining 12.5% ​​to the French television producer Banijay. The latter thus held 62.5% of Brainpool and thus the majority of the shares. Banijay then wanted to recall the co-partners Jörg Grabosch and Andreas Scheuermann from the management, who defended themselves against this in court and wanted to prohibit the sale of the Raab shares to Banijay. In August 2018, the Cologne Regional Court ruled that Raab may not sell his shares in the Cologne-based production company Brainpool, but the combined majority of Stefan Raab and Banijay is sufficient to remove the two managing directors. The two managing directors were immediately replaced by Peter Langenberg from Banijay. At the beginning of 2019 it was announced that Banijay Germany CEO and shareholder Marcus Wolter was appointed as the new managing director. In June 2020, Banijay took over the rest of the shares

On March 13, 2020, Brainpool announced that due to the Corona crisis, all Brainpool show productions will take place without an audience until further notice. The measure was lifted in July 2020.

MySpass.de

Brainpool operates a video-on-demand platform under MySpass.de , on which the company makes many of its productions available for viewing free of charge. The offer is financed through video advertising, as is customary on the video platform YouTube, on which they are also represented.

In addition to access via a web browser, the content is also available via app for iOS and Android , as well as Smart TVs from Samsung and LG.

The platform was first activated in 2008 in a public test version.
