The Bachelor ( English for " bachelor ") is a television show that is broadcast on RTL . In her, an attractive bachelor should find a life partner. The Bachelor is based on the American format The Bachelor at ABC , which was first produced in 2002. The 23rd season started in January 2019 in the USA .

procedure

In group and individual dates, the bachelor and the candidates get to know each other in a sophisticated environment. Elimination rounds take place until the winner is determined. To this end, the bachelor hands over roses to his favorites ("Night of Roses"), mainly at the end of a series, with the question: "Will you accept this rose?" Since fewer roses are available than there are candidates in the race, they divorce the applicants who are not offered a rose at the end of the respective episode. By rejecting the rose, a participant can bring about her own departure.

First season

The first season was produced with 25 candidates in 2003 on the Côte d'Azur . The premiere was on November 19, 2003 on RTL and ORF one.

The bachelor shown was the 29-year-old bank clerk Marcel Maderitsch, who was portrayed as solo and professionally successful in the show. The broadcast lasted seven weeks and reached an average of 3.6 million viewers. In the final, the bachelor's degree chose Juliane Ziegler, a 22-year-old chimney sweep from Berlin . Maderitsch began a relationship with runner-up Nicole after the season.

The candidates also included Ola Siemens, Katharina Pulk from Vienna, Marijana Mijatovic, Viviana Hoffmann, Marina Civic, Natalie Paal, Rabea Kloeppner, Jeannine Ehmsen, Tanja, Elisabeth, Simone and Katharina from Hamburg.

Second season

From January 4 to February 22, 2012 RTL showed a second season of the bachelor's degree in eight episodes.

The 30-year-old image manager and Mister Hamburg 2009 Paul Janke from Hamburg was given the opportunity to find a partner among 20 candidates. The location was Cape Town , with the exception of episode 6, in which the last four candidates introduced Janke to their families and friends in Germany. In the final, the Bachelor decided in favor of the 27-year-old Anja Polzer from Weingarten (Baden) and declared that he had fallen in love with her. Polzer was working as a PR manager at the time and had previously completed a teaching degree in the subject area of German and history . In an interview in RTL news magazine Punkt 6 on February 23, 2012, Janke and Polzer announced that they were no longer together: The three months between recording and broadcasting the program had been a very difficult time and they had no longer found each other.

The broadcast was recorded in October / November 2011, and the couple then went on vacation together in the United States. After the completion of the shooting, the two were no longer allowed to meet publicly due to a clause in the contract with RTL in order not to give any indication of Janke's choice.

After a weak start, the ratings for Der Bachelor recently exceeded those of the lead-in show Deutschland sucht den Superstar . On average, the eight broadcast editions reached 4.82 million viewers and a 21.9 percent market share among viewers aged 14 to 49.

criticism

The first season of The Bachelor was already heavily criticized. The journalist Oliver Fuchs wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung on January 2, 2004 that the show was “inhuman” and “the most depraved TV show in living memory”. He described the candidates as "ultra-submissive" and "mostly mouse-like". The politician Sabine Bätzing explained: “The image of women that is conveyed to the audience is terrifying and reminds me of the camel trade.” Udo Jürgens was quoted as saying: “I find it cheap and slutty when 25 women vie for a man . ”In Austria, where the program was broadcast on ORF1 , women politicians were bothered by the“ basic constellation that discriminates against women ”and the ORF Public Council also called for its removal.

RTL spokeswoman Tina Land said: “Everyone involved knew what to expect. The women can get out at any time. ”In addition, there was unsubstantiated speculation about secret contracts with the candidates; the relationship between the Bachelor's degree and the winner Juliane Ziegler, which ended after the end of the first season, was discussed. The then RTL boss Gerhard Zeiler explained: “It's just pure entertainment. And there can be no talk of misogyny either. Next we finally do "The Bachelorette", which chooses the right man from among 25 candidates. "

The second season was criticized with similar arguments as the first season.
