Millionärswahl was a German casting show that was produced by Brainpool and Millionärswahl GmbH in Cologne-Mülheim. While the first live show and the semifinals were broadcast on ProSieben and the second live show on Sat.1 , the final was only broadcast over the Internet due to the low number of viewers, after the number of programs had already been significantly reduced. Georg Wurth received one million euros as the winner of the show.
procedure
At www.millionärswahl.de , the website for the show, you could apply with videos, photos or texts from mid-October to mid-November 2013. In four voting rounds, the participants themselves voted on the 49 best candidates. Initially, it was planned to distribute these candidates over seven live shows. Thus, seven candidates would have appeared per live show, one of which would have been elected to the final. Each candidate should be introduced by a video clip and be given the opportunity to perform live. The live shows and the finale were to be broadcast from January 9th to 31st, 2014 on ProSieben on Thursdays and on Sat.1 on Fridays during prime time.
After the low audience figures for the first two live shows, the remaining five live shows were replaced by a semi-final show, which was also broadcast on ProSieben on Saturday at 10:45 pm late in the evening. The final was also supposed to be postponed to late Saturday evening and broadcast on ProSieben, but was completely removed from the television program after again poor audience numbers for the semifinals. The broadcast took place exclusively on the Internet during prime time on Saturdays.
Voting
The voting on entering the finals or winning a show was made over three different ballots.
- 1. The online voting
- All registered participants on the show's website have one vote that they can give to a candidate.
- 2. The audience voting
- All viewers can vote for their candidate by phone, SMS or internet.
- 3. The live voting
- The seven candidates of the respective show must award four points (from Show 2 only one point) to candidates. You are allowed to distribute the points freely, but not give yourself any points.
In the first show, the first place in the online voting received seven points, the second place six points and so on. This procedure was then also used for the audience voting. After all, the candidates for the show awarded their points one after the other, and the order was drawn. Whoever received the most points from the three votes qualified for the final.
Since this system meant that the last placed after online and viewer voting finally moved into the final, the voting system was revised for the second edition: From now on, each candidate could only award one point, with this voting before the points are awarded other two votes took place. In addition, the candidates received double the number of points through the audience voting.
Because Ralf Zander would have won by applying the new weighting in the first show, he was offered an additional starting place in the final, which he refused. He was also promised that ProSieben / Sat.1 would pay him the missing amount if donations did not raise enough money to adapt his niece Neele's bathroom to her disability.

Semifinals
The semi-final was on January 18, 2014 at 10:45 p.m. on ProSieben and thus in direct competition with the RTL show I am a star - get me out of here! broadcast. In the live show, the remaining 35 candidates were presented in the clips that had already been produced. They were divided into five decision-making rounds. After the presentation of seven candidates, the audience and the web had the chance to vote their favorites for the final. Due to the lack of live performances, there was also no live voting for the candidates.

reception
criticism
After the first edition, the show received mostly negative reviews. The questionable voting system in particular was heavily criticized.
Matthias Kohlmaier praised the “exciting approach” on Süddeutsche.de and certified the broadcasters a “courageous attempt”, which however “failed poorly”. The candidates were uninteresting and the staging was "lame and boring". The biggest point of criticism was the voting system, which Kohlmaier described as "a huge mess on the audience".
Manuel Nunez Sanchez also praised the idea as a “courageous and commendable attempt” on Oddsmeter.de , but could not get used to the implementation. Apart from the "successful double moderation" there was nothing positive about the show. He could only explain the selection of candidates with a complete failure of the “wisdom of the many” or with an average of so “lousy” field of applicants that those “shown here were actually the spearhead of what was reasonable”. The silence and the boos of the audience after the live voting commented Sanchez as “symptomatic of a show where pretty much everything went wrong that could have gone wrong”.
Thomas Lückerath from the media magazine DWDL.de said that the show "quickly ran out of air". He also thinks it's a shame that "in the end, you could follow the failure of a show idea live on German television" and that the "idea of a social show with its own web community as a casting platform" was not bad at all.
The second edition received a similarly negative rating. Suria Reiche described the show on express.de as a "failed experiment [that is looking for its equal". She criticized the candidates' lack of TV suitability and the moderators, who appeared to have “just fallen out of bed in front of the camera”.
The review in the WAZ also criticized the quality of the moderation, which she explained due to the pressure exerted on the moderators due to the unsuccessful premiere: “Wrong candidates, clips and actions were announced, the telephone puzzle read out with wrong answers. Again and again Elton and his colleague Jeannine Michaelsen corrected each other. "
Audience ratings
The first live show achieved a market share of 10.7% in the target group of 14 to 49 year old viewers and was thus slightly below the ProSieben average. The second live show achieved significantly lower ratings in this group with a market share of 5.6%. The semi-finals achieved even lower ratings at a later time, with a market share of 3.0% in the target group. In total, the show reached 310,000 viewers and was only 256th in the daily charts of the programs broadcast on that day.
