Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e. V. (German: Leben mit Wasser) is a development policy non-profit organization founded in 2006 with headquarters in Hamburg-St. Pauli . The international network of people and organizations advocates safe access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation.

Viva con Agua has existed in Switzerland as an independent association since 2009. Further branches followed in 2014 in Austria, 2015 in the Netherlands and 2016 in Uganda (in the capital Kampala). Viva con Agua South Africa and Viva con Agua California have also been formally in the process of being founded in 2020.

Goals and structure

Viva con Agua is committed to improving the drinking water supply and the availability of sanitary facilities, with a focus on countries in the global south . Welthungerhilfe is the largest partner in projects in the global south . The association sees itself as an “all-profit organization” with an “open network”. The "open network" lives mainly from individual initiative supported by the association.

According to the company, “All-Profit” means that everyone involved should benefit from their commitment, both recipients and supporters. Support is not necessarily seen as a donation, but as an investment in water projects and thus in a better future for everyone. The approach is intended to contribute to a social rethinking of the partnership between the north and the south.

More than 15,000 volunteers worldwide support Viva con Agua, who organize themselves in local groups, so-called "crews", and implement fundraising campaigns. In Germany there are local groups in over 50 cities.

In the first six years, over 2 million euros in donations were collected. According to the company, the project volume for 2019 amounts to EUR 3.6 million. According to the company, the water projects financed in this way have improved the living conditions of over three million people since 2006.

history

First project in Cuba and foundation

In January 2005 the first team of FC St. Pauli traveled to a training camp in Cuba. Activated by the trip, Benjamin Adrion , then a midfielder of FC St. Pauli , wanted to get involved socially in Cuba. With the vision of alleviating the consequences of the catastrophic conditions in Cuba due to the lack of water supply, he laid the foundation stone for Viva con Agua (VcA).

In cooperation with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe , VcA started the first project in Havana in May 2005, where water dispensers were to be set up in 120 kindergartens to provide clean drinking water. By June 2006, over 50,000 euros in donations had been acquired and 153 kindergartens and four sports schools in Cuba were equipped with drinking water dispensers.

In July 2006, the constitution of Viva con Agua de St. Pauli was adopted at the founding meeting. The Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli association was officially founded in September of the same year.

Since July 2007 VcA has been collecting money at festivals by encouraging festival-goers to donate their returnable cups.

Viva con Agua Foundation and social entrepreneurship

In 2010 the Viva con Agua Foundation was established. The purpose of its statutes is to promote development cooperation and environmental protection, public health care, youth welfare and sport. The founding donors were Bela B, Mark Tavassol, Marcel Eger and Renate Eger. The foundation owns the trademark rights to Viva con Agua.

Viva con Agua is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany.

In 2020 VcA will support “WASH projects” (water, sanitation, hygiene) in twelve countries, for example in Nepal, Uganda, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.

Connection to FC St. Pauli

Viva con Agua is supported by FC St. Pauli and its fans: The football club is making parts of the Millerntor Stadium available for the “Millerntor Gallery” social art and culture festival that has been taking place since 2011. In addition, the Viva con Agua football club makes it possible to collect returnable cups at home games. After the supporters of 1. FC Nürnberg were able to set up a new donation record for the away block in the Millerntor Stadium every year, since the 2018/19 Bundesliga season the people of Nuremberg have also been collecting deposit cup donations for drinking water projects in Ethiopia in the local Max Morlock Stadium.

Well-known artists such as Gentleman , Clueso , Maeckes , Marteria , Schandmaul , Wir sind Helden and Bela B gave benefit concerts for the benefit of the Viva con Aguas projects. Viva con Agua also works closely with festivals and festival organizers such as the Reeperbahn Festival and FKP Scorpio .

Actions

Deposit cup donation bin

In August and September 2007, the first charity festival was held in Hamburg under the title “Viva con Agua Water Days”. With 5,000 visitors, the event raised 30,000 euros in donations that financed five wells in the Millennium Village of Manigri in Benin. The band Irie Révoltés released a music video in 2007 to promote the Water Days and donated spring mounts in Rwanda. More water days followed in 2009 and 2011.

In 2008, Viva-con-Agua activists marched 1055 km on foot in 39 days from Hamburg to Basel to the opening match of EURO 2008 under the title “Water! March” . The campaign was also the cornerstone for the club's offshoot in Switzerland.

Since 2008, many supporters of the organization have been hitchhiking in the form of a hitchhiking through various cities across Europe in the summer to draw attention to the global shortage of drinking water. This movement became the Club of Roam Autostop in 2014! eV founded, which continues to organize the tram running until 2017 and collected donations for Viva con Agua until 2017.

Viva con Agua is represented at many festivals in German-speaking countries. On site, 10 to 40 volunteer supporters, among other things, accept deposit cups from the festival visitors. In 2012, more than 90,000 euros in donations were collected for the association's projects at over 70 festivals. In 2019, Viva con Agua collected more than 1.3 million euros through donations of deposit cups at festivals and concerts.

In 2018 Viva con Agua started the #waterisahumanright campaign together with photographers. By spring 2020, almost 200 celebrities had been photographed for the campaign. Since June 2019, Snapchat and Instagram have also had a filter with the "Water-is-a-human-right" cardboard sign.

Also in 2018, Viva con Agua launched the “#kickshit Challenge” together with Goldeimer. During the event, a roll of toilet paper had to be juggled with the foot for as long as possible. The aim of the fundraising campaign was to raise funds for VcA and Goldeimer sanitary projects.
