Startsocial e. V. ( spelling: startsocial ) is a registered association that annually organizes the nationwide startsocial competition to promote social, voluntary organizations, projects and ideas. The association is under the patronage of Chancellor Angela Merkel and was selected in 2009 as a selected location for the “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” initiative.
aims
Startsocial has been promoting voluntary work in Germany since 2001. The aim of the non-profit association is to support social initiatives through the transfer of knowledge between business and social project work.

organization
Startsocial is based on the idea that smaller social projects are also “ventures” and can therefore benefit from experience from commercial enterprises. That is why the association awards 100 advisory grants to social, voluntary initiatives nationwide under the motto “Help for helpers”. The winning projects will be advised by experts from business or the professional non-profit sector for four months on a voluntary basis. These so-called coaches accompany the representatives of the projects in the implementation of their idea or the further development of their project and convey their know-how e.g. B. on marketing , organizational development , accounting , fundraising, etc. After the end of the consultation phase, the 25 most convincing scholarship projects will be determined by a voluntary, independent jury and invited to a federal award ceremony in Berlin. Seven initiatives will receive cash prizes totaling 35,000 euros.
Around 200 coaches and 300 jurors as well as numerous pro bono experts are involved in each round of the competition. Taken together, they do around 18,000 volunteer hours per competition round. Since the initiation of Startsocial in 2001, around 7,100 social projects in various areas have applied; 1,400 have received a consulting grant. Far beyond the four-month advisory phase, Startsocial also offers social initiatives access to contacts, advanced training and individual, free advisory services through an alumni network.
Patronage and sponsorship
Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel took over the patronage in 2005. In recent years, the patroness has always personally invited the Federal Chancellery to the award ceremony and given her special prize to one of the 25 participating projects.
Startsocial is supported by the non-profit organization Startsocial e. V.
Sponsors
In addition to the initiator McKinsey & Company, the main sponsors of the startsocial competition are Allianz SE , Atos SE and Deutsche Bank AG. and ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE .

Advantages and disadvantages of competition for social projects
- advantages
- Through the scholarship, social initiatives receive professional advice as well as training and networking events and can make decisive progress. Seven of the 100 initiatives will also receive a cash prize of 5,000 euros each. Chancellor Angela Merkel has been the patron since 2005, invites you to the award ceremony at the Federal Chancellery every year of the competition and donated a special prize.
- A decisive advantage is the strong public perception as a startsocial scholarship holder - startsocial is considered a seal of quality in the social sector. This allows fundraising to be accelerated.
- When applying for the competition, your own ideas and concepts are reflected on. Each applicant also receives three formulated, written feedback from the jury with suggestions for the further development of their own initiative, regardless of the nomination for a scholarship.
- After the end of the scholarship, all scholarship holder projects are automatically included in the Startsocial alumni network, which offers them contacts, training and free advice.
- disadvantage
- The application process and the four-month consultation phase are very time-consuming, which social initiatives need to be clear about in advance.
- Advice is at the fore of the competition. This competition is therefore not suitable for initiatives that seek purely financial support.
