Jambo Bukoba ( Swahili for Hello Bukoba ) is a registered non-profit organization in Germany that has been committed to sports and games for better education , health and gender equality for children and young people since 2008 with its subsidiary, registered in Tanzania . In 2018 the association had 417 members.

activity

Jambo Bukoba promotes education, health (through age-appropriate HIV / AIDS and hygiene education) as well as equality between the sexes. The concept was developed by the German Sport University Cologne and combines sport and play within the framework of the curriculum with experience-based learning . It also includes teachers, parents and public life and improves both the pedagogical know-how of teachers and the school infrastructure.

The aim is to support children and young people in Tanzania in their everyday school life - for a better start in life and a sustainable chance for a better and more self-determined future.

Action

In Bukoba , the Tanzanian subsidiary carries out projects across the board in the Kagera region in northwestern Tanzania. These are based on 3 pillars: teacher development, sporting competitions and school building projects.

  • Association employees organize workshops for teachers on site. In these, on the one hand, the concept is conveyed, on the other hand, the games developed by the Sport University Cologne are shown and learned. Doctors also provide information on HIV / AIDS. In addition, teachers are also being developed into “multipliers”
  • public sports competitions are organized - so-called bonanzas. These are based on the Jambo Bukoba games. The focus is not on top athletic performance, but on gender parity, fair behavior and good teamwork. Four schools compete with each other in each district. Once a year the "Regional Bonanza" takes place, in which the winning schools from the districts compete against each other. This is a big event for all participants - with music and dance
  • School building projects: The winning school of the Regional Bonanza has the opportunity to implement a school building project. The school itself decides on the most urgent need. Jambo Bukoba eV bears 75% of the costs; The school pays 25% of the costs itself - optionally in the form of money, working time or materials
  • For the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) project, water tanks were provided to collect water during the rainy season for 8 schools (Feb 2017). As well as hand washing systems including soap and hygiene training for teachers-2018, an additional 8 water filters were installed to achieve drinking water quality.

Background to the situation in Tanzania

44.8% of the 56 million inhabitants of Tanzania are younger than 15 years. General problems: Regular school attendance is not a matter of course; many go to school sporadically or drop out prematurely. Girls in particular are disadvantaged: they often have to work, help with household chores or stay away from school out of shame because of their menstruation. They are particularly struggling with early pregnancies, the dangers of HIV / AIDS and the inequality of treatment for girls. 70% of those newly infected with HIV / AIDS are between 15 and 24 years old - 75% of these are girls. 29% of the population over the age of 15 cannot read or write.

Clemens Mulokozi, the founder of Jambo Bukoba, grew up in Tanzania between the ages of five and twelve - this is one of the reasons why he has great personal drive to significantly improve the situation for girls and boys in Tanzania.

Results

  • 516,413 school children can be reached and supported with the Jambo Bukoba concept
  • 884 schools and 1,730 teachers took part in the workshops and school building projects
