Children at Switch - around the world in 4 days

Switch - Around the World in 4 Days is a social project supported by the Kulturbrücke Hamburg. It consists of a children's trip around the world in their own city with the aim of promoting participation in the social life of people with a migration background . So far, the trips have taken place in the cities of Hamburg and Lübeck .

The idea

Children and young people in the age 8-14 years will meet on four consecutive holidays from 10 to 18 and learn the habits, the daily life and often still strange customs of other countries of origin know. Each child is the host for a day and invites the other three participants to their home. There, the day is freely organized by the associated family. The children cook and eat, for example, local dishes , do handicrafts, make music and dress up. It is also desirable for parents to report on their culture , for example in the form of exciting stories about the history of the country or the reasons and origins of the local traditions . The mutual mediation of one's own culture with the support of friends and family should be the focus here.

At the end of the trip, the children write a travel diary in which they report on what they have experienced. In this way, the sustainability of the project and the children's self-reflection should be promoted. The trips take place in Hamburg in the summer and winter holidays, in Lübeck in spring and autumn and are always free.

history

  • The project was launched in 2005 by Kulturbrücke Hamburg eV .
  • 18 children from 10 different nations took part in the pilot project during the winter vacation 2005/06.
  • In 2009 the first switch trip was organized in Lübeck.

Up to now there have been 14 "world trips in your own city" in Hamburg and 6 in Lübeck. In total, almost 900 children plus their families from 75 nations took part in Switch on the 20 trips.

The aim and philosophy of the project

Around every second child in Hamburg has a migration background . Switch is intended to strengthen intercultural exchange and communication between the different cultures. The project aims to enable young people to get to know and appreciate the diversity of other cultures and ways of life. It tries to break down prejudices in this way . The children taking part in the “Switch World Trips” not only encounter a lot of the unknown: The aim is for the participating children to learn to deal with other cultures in a playful way so that they internalize social concepts of life such as tolerance and cultural diversity as early as possible .

Not only did 900 children take part in the project, their siblings , parents , friends and relatives were also always involved in the project, which increases Switch's sphere of activity. Switch is an uncomplicated but very effective method of preventing prejudice in children against foreign cultures.

The initiator

Ms. Hourvash Pourkian , CEO of Kulturbrücke Hamburg eV , initiated the project in 2005. The idea developed from key experiences of her childhood: As a native of Tehran, she met many different people from different cultures in her home country. She was particularly impressed by the way a Japanese family lived.

The Hamburg Senator for Schools and Vocational Training Ties Rabe is the patron of the project .
