The wellcome gGmbH (proper spelling: wellcome) is a national institute nonprofit organization for the placement of volunteers young to relieve parents based in Hamburg.

Definition of terms

The case word “wellcome” is made up of the English terms “wellness” and “welcome” (for: “welcome”). This should symbolize that families in need should be fine and that newborns are welcome.

organization

The social and non-profit project to support families after the birth of a baby up to the age of one is active nationwide. The volunteers are mostly experienced mothers or fathers and support them in looking after the child. The offer is aimed at all families with newborns, regardless of their social environment. For example, the mother's exhaustion due to a restless baby or helplessness without a family nearby are reasons for the help of the organization.

history

The predecessor of the social enterprise was an initiative founded in 2002, has been registered as a GmbH since 2009 and now operates nationwide as a social franchise company with 250 locations and around 4,500 volunteer employees (as of 2014). The idea was developed after the founder Rose Volz-Schmidt noticed a lack of offers of this kind from personal experience and from a professional point of view. Founder Rose Volz-Schmidt applied for the "wellcome" project in 2001 at the startsocial business plan competition and won the federal prize. In addition to the resulting awareness, coaching by the management consultancy McKinsey was associated with it, which enabled her to implement her project in the form of professional social entrepreneurship .

organization structure

The project is organized as a social franchising. The project was founded as one of the German prototypes of the social franchise system in 2002 and consists of 250 teams in 15 federal states in 2015. The managing director is the founder Rose Volz-Schmidt. In 2014 wellcome placed volunteers in more than 4,600 families.

The various teams receive their corporate identity from the head office in Hamburg, which also takes on marketing.

Volunteers, a team coordinator and the management of the host institution work together in the local teams.

The tasks of the volunteers include looking after the baby or siblings on an hourly basis as well as providing support with various tasks and appointments in everyday life (e.g. visits to the doctor). The volunteer assignments are organized by the coordinator of the respective location. As a specialist, she advises families and provides them with the help they need from a professional network. In addition to public relations work and local fundraising , the management of the wellcome location integrates the organization into the local structure of an existing facility, such as B. maternity centers , family education centers , diaconiae or multi-generational housing . A professional network of maternity clinics, midwives, gynecologists, youth welfare offices, voluntary welfare services , etc. Individual advice and mediation on site.

The organization is mainly financed through donations. The non-profit organization has voluntarily committed itself to using the financial resources transparently and has therefore signed the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .

In some federal states, the work of the wellcome state coordination is funded through public funds.

External perception

Thanks to the system of central marketing control, wellcome can be seen nationwide. This happens e.g. E.g. through the cooperation with the drugstore chain dm based on the display of brochures in the branches. In addition to dm, wellcome also cooperates with the natural cosmetics and natural medicine company Weleda AG and with the BabyOne specialist store for baby items . Wellcome also supports the pharmaceutical manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline on a regular basis.

The initiative has steadily grown in popularity since it was founded in 2002. In addition to the well-known supporters, especially from politics, wellcome was able to use various media such as Eltern magazine or on television at the Stern Stiftung e. V. present their work with Ursula von der Leyen ; wellcome implemented the “Families in Need” project together with the Stern Foundation.

An image film was created by students from the European Media and Business Academy in Hamburg in the 07/08 winter semester and achieved international renown through the “Intermedia Globe Silver” award at the 2009 WorldMediaFestival.

Wellcome was also able to gain international fame through invitations to the World Economic Forum , where founder and managing director Rose Volz-Schmidt appeared as one of the elected European Social Entrepreneurs (see awards).

In addition, Volz-Schmidt is a member of the Schwab Foundation's competition to vote for Social Entrepreneur Germany and a member of the radio jury for the Robert Bosch Stiftung's “Civic Commitment” journalist prize . In 2011, wellcome received the Phineo ' Work' seal for exemplary commitment.

Awards

The idea has won several awards, such as the Social Entrepreneur 2007 from the Schwab Foundation . With this award for the founder Volz-Schmidt, a woman in Germany was named Social Entrepreneur of the Year for the first time.

In 2006 the company was also awarded the recognition prize of the Hamburg Citizens' Prize of the CDU Hamburg. In 2009 the managing director from Hamburg received the Federal Cross of Merit . In 2011 Rose Volz-Schmidt was named one of 150 “responsible persons” by the Robert Bosch Foundation . She is also a member of the startsocial advisory board, whose competition for social projects was won by wellcome in 2001/2002.

At the federal level, Chancellor Angela Merkel has been the patron of wellcome since 2007 . In the federal states in which the organization is active, the ministers of social affairs and social senators have taken on the patronage of the wellcome teams.

The proceeds from the benefit concert of the then Federal President Joachim Gauck in 2012 went to the company.
