from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ArbeiterKind.de non-profit GmbH for the promotion of university studies for non-academic children is an initiative in German-speaking countries that aims to increase the proportion of non-academic children at universities and to support them on their way to successfully completing their studies . The initiators are Katja Urbatsch , her brother Marc Urbatsch and Wolf Dermann. The company is based in Berlin.

history

According to social surveys by the German Student Union (DSW), the Hochschul-Informations-System (HIS) and the Federal Statistical Office , 83 out of 100 academic children in Germany go to university. Out of 100 children of non-academic origin, on the other hand, only 23 study, although twice as many achieve higher education entrance qualification. The financial burden is one of the reasons these high school graduates keep them from studying. According to the initiative, the actual educational disadvantage lies primarily in a large information deficit and in cultural reservations in the family environment.

The initiative aims to remedy this information deficit and encourage students from non-academic families of origin to take up university studies. This purpose is served on the one hand by an information offer on the Internet, which among other things provides tips on how to finance the studies. On the other hand, ArbeiterKind.de is building a Germany-wide network with mentors who want to support pupils and students who are looking for help.

There are 6,000 volunteer mentors; there are also regular get-togethers at many of the now 80 local groups, u. a. in Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt am Main, Giessen, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Munich and Münster. The social enterprise is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany .

Awards

In September 2008 the company was awarded the engagement prize of the association of former FES scholarship holders and was included in the federal selection of the best 25 projects in the startsocial competition . In 2009, the initiative was one of the selected locations in the “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” competition under the patronage of the then Federal President Horst Köhler , and in the 2009/10 winter semester was one of the winners of the 4th Federal Competition Students for Students: Student Union Prize for special social commitment of German Student Union. Mensa in Deutschland eV, the association by and for gifted people , has awarded Arbeiterkind.de the IQ Prize 2015 in the category of gifted people in public .

On October 2, 2018, the founder and managing director of ArbeiterKind.de, Katja Urbatsch, received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Palace. In doing so, he recognizes her longstanding social commitment and her outstanding commitment to greater educational equality and cultural participation in Germany.

Mentoring program

The mentors organize support at the local level for working class children or for those who are not related to academics and thus belong to the first generation of students.
