querstadtein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The social enterprise querstadtein organizes city tours in Berlin , during which homeless people and refugees convey their view of the city. The sponsor is the non-profit association Stadtsichten e. V.

The aim of querstadtein is to create a space for marginalized groups such as the homeless or asylum seekers and the other members of society for an encounter at eye level and an exchange that sensitizes them to other realities of life and counteracts stereotypes . Querstadtein's activities received a lot of attention in German and foreign-language media from the start. The program is aimed at adults and young people, but there are also guided tours for children from the age of seven.

History and sponsorship

In cities such as Hamburg or London , there were city tours already before 2013, which were carried out by formerly homeless people. The two founders of querstadtein, Sally Ollech and Katharina Kühn, developed the concept for Berlin in the summer of 2012 based on a tour in Copenhagen . At the end of March 2013, 13 people founded the non-profit association Stadtsichten e. V . The founders worked out the first city tour with five homeless and formerly homeless as well as 15 volunteer workers. The city guide finds querstadtein through other social organizations and network partners. The social enterprise is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany .

Querstadtein's activities received a lot of attention in German and foreign-language media from the start.

aims

The founders of querstadtein noticed a large gap between the homeless and the rest of society and tried to counteract this. They pursued the goal of creating a space for marginalized groups and the other members of society to meet at eye level, for exchange and mindfulness. New perspectives should be created for the participants in the tours and a contribution against stereotyping should be made.

The guided tours Refugees show their Berlin can also be subordinated to this objective. Refugees become actors in civic education, and tour participants are made aware of the variety of causes of flight.

activities

City tour homeless show their Berlin

On the approximately two-hour tour, the city guides, former homeless people, tell of survival strategies, of places and people that shaped their time on the streets. But facts on the subject of homelessness are also conveyed.

The tours homeless show their Berlin are carried out in cooperation with Caritas and have been held since June 2013. At first there was only one city guide and a guided tour every two weeks. In the meantime (August 2016) three city guides are offering tours through City West and Berlin-Mitte, which, due to the high demand, take place more frequently than at the beginning of querstadtein's work. In October 2015, 7,000 people had already taken part in the tours. The program was designed primarily for adults and young people. But a tour specially tailored to children aged seven and over has also been offered since 2015.

Guided city tour Refugees show their Berlin

Since spring 2016 querstadtein has been organizing the two-hour city tour Refugees show their Berlin through Berlin-Neukölln in English. This, too, aims to make the majority of society aware of images of a fringe group and to give them the opportunity to review and change. Personal experiences are combined with information on flight and asylum.

By July 2016, four people with an escape history had already been recruited as city guides. They try to convey to their listeners what it feels like to start over as an asylum seeker in Germany . For this purpose, the participants in Sonnenallee , for example , where advertising signs in Arabic script are attached to many houses, receive pieces of paper with the name of a shop in Arabic and the task of finding the word on a sign in the street.

financing

Personnel costs make up a large part of querstadtein's expenses. There are currently two full-time positions for project management and volunteer helpers. The city guides also work on a voluntary basis and only receive an allowance for their work.

Funding comes from several sources:

Ticket sales

Querstadtein receives part of its income from the sale of tickets for the city tours. In addition to a normal and a reduced price, there is also the option of purchasing a solidarity ticket at a higher price in order to support the activities to a greater extent. However, this income is not yet sufficient to cover costs (as of November 2016).

Funding

The Federal Agency for Civic Education supports querstadtein for guided city tours for refugees as a model project in the field of flight and asylum. Thanks to funding from the Auerbach Foundation , querstadtein has been able to finance a full-time position for project management since March 2014; in October 2015, the creation of a second full-time position for project management enabled the development of the guided tours Refugees show their Berlin . Querstadtein also receives funds from the Local Social Capital (LSK) program , which enables micro-projects to be funded from EU and state funds, in this case via the Berlin Senate.

donate

One-time donations are just as possible as regular donations through membership in the support group of the non-profit sponsoring association Stadtsichten eV . Querstadtein can also be supported through the Internet shopping platform Boost .
