Avira is a German company from the IT security industry . With its virus scanners , it had around 240 million users worldwide in 2014.

history

In 1986 H + BEDV Datentechnik was founded by Tjark Auerbach and a colleague, with H + B standing for the first names of the wives ( Hannelore and Betty ) of the two founders. The main purpose of the company was initially to import special software from the USA to Germany. Later it turned to computer security.

In 1988, the company launched AntiVir (marketed under the Avira Antivirus brand since 2011 ), one of the first professional antivirus programs. Two years later, Tjark Auerbach, Martin Ritter and Norbert Huth converted the company into a GmbH . While six people were still working at H + BEDV Datentechnik GmbH in 1990 , the number of employees increased to 250 by 2007 in Tettnang on Lake Constance and at other company locations in Germany.

In June 2004, AntiVir integrated protection against Internet dialers , which at that time was not included in any other anti-virus program in the world. In the same year an AntiVir port for Linux appeared . Later, in addition to the Windows variants from Windows 2000 onwards , the Unix variants FreeBSD , OpenBSD and Solaris were also supported.

On March 1, 2006, H + BEDV Datentechnik took over the name of its subsidiary Avira, which is responsible for international business customers, and merged with it and with its sister company Personal Products, which is responsible for private customers . In 2011, the converted Avira GmbH was renamed Avira Holding GmbH . This merged into Avira Campus Management GmbH & Co. KG in February 2015 , which was renamed Avira Holding GmbH & Co. KG a month later . The operative business, thus also the development of Avira Antivirus, is managed by Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG.

In April 2011, after 16 months of construction, Avira opened its new company headquarters in Kaplaneiweg in Tettnang . At that time, around 320 people were employed there.

Since October 2012, Avira has been offering the Avira Experts Market, a worldwide independent online platform on which users can get help from experts with IT and computer problems. The Experts Market is accessible to everyone; A transparent evaluation and payment system is used for processing. Since the 2013 edition for private users, the application has been connected to a cloud . The data and signatures are compared with the cloud in real time and blocked or allowed depending on the security level. This means that new pests can be dealt with much faster. The so-called cloud service only works with an existing network connection and is only set up in the payment programs. Avira also offers a live support service . With this service, after having obtained permission, an employee logs on to the customer's computer for remote maintenance in order to fix the problem there in real time.

As of June 30, 2013, support for Linux was discontinued. According to Avira, existing users should still be supported until June 2016.

Travis Witteveen has been the Managing Director of Avira since July 1, 2013. The founder and previous managing director Tjark Auerbach, who is also the namesake of the Auerbach Foundation established a few years earlier , still holds the majority of the shares in the company.

On February 15, 2018, Avira announced in a press release that the Avira Managed E-Mail Security product would no longer be offered for strategic reasons. In addition to German Avira Managed E-Mail Security customers, this change also affects customers of the Cleanport brand, who mainly come from the BeNeLux countries . According to the press release, the Avira Managed E-Mail Security division will be completely taken over by the German cloud security provider Hornetsecurity from Hanover.

On April 9, 2020, it was announced via press releases that the Bahrain- based investment firm Investcorp Technology Partners IV had acquired a majority of the shares in Avira. The transaction has yet to be assessed under antitrust law.
