history

U25 Freiburg was founded in 2002 by employees of the suicide prevention center "Arbeitskreis Leben" (AKL) in Freiburg im Breisgau , because many young people hardly used the traditional counseling services. After U25 was increasingly used by young people in crises, U25 expanded in 2009 and today advises from ten locations nationwide in Berlin , Hamburg , Dresden , Gelsenkirchen , Paderborn , Dortmund and Biberach an der Riss , as well as Lingen (Emsland) and Nuremberg . The consulting project has also been producing prevention videos for YouTube since 2019.

society

The approximately 230 consultants are young people up to the age of 25 and work on a voluntary basis. U25 anonymously advises around 1,250 young people who are at risk of suicide every year. In 2018 there were 7,725 mail contacts. The association is supported by Caritas Germany and funded by the BMFSFJ .

In 2018 U25 online suicide prevention was launched at Children Jugend Hilft! -Competition awarded and nominated for the German Engagement Prize.

background

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among adolescents and young adults aged 10-25 years. One of the reasons is that the inhibition threshold of many young people in suicidal crises is usually so high that they do not dare to talk about it or go to a counseling center.
