Lasse Kjus (born January 14, 1971 in Siggerud , Viken , Norway ) is a former Norwegian ski racer . He won the overall World Cup twice , was once Olympic champion and three times world champion . At the 1999 World Championships in Vail , he won a medal in all five disciplines (two gold, three silver) - an achievement that was unmatched up to then and since then, at best comparable to the few that were before the introduction of the Super-G in all four disciplines Have won medals: Toni Sailer in 1956 and 1958, Marielle Goitschel in 1966, Jean-Claude Killy in 1968 and Rosi Mittermaier in 1976 (their combination medal being the automatic result of the other three medals, Kjus had to compete in a separate race). He won a total of 16 medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships and is one of the most successful ski racers ever.

biography

The all-rounder won 18 World Cup races (10 downhill runs, 2 Super-G, 2 giant slalom, 4 combinations) and the overall World Cup in 1996 and 1999. In Morioka he was combined world champion in 1993 . At the 1999 World Championships in Vail , he was able to triumph in giant slalom and super-G and also won silver in slalom , combined and downhill . Kjus has won the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel five times and the Lauberhorn race in Wengen twice .

At the Olympic Games, his record is not as outstanding as at the World Championships. Nevertheless, he managed to win gold in combination at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer . He also won silver in downhill and combined in Nagano in 1998 . At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , he was able to add silver in the downhill and bronze in the giant slalom to his collection of medals. His last World Cup race, a Super-G, he finished on March 16, 2006 in Åre with a 13th place. After two years without a competition, Kjus started again in the Norwegian championships in 2008 and finished third in the downhill.

In 1999 he won the election for Norway's Sportsman of the Year , in the same year he was honored with the Aftenposten gold medal and awarded the Skieur d'Or by the International Association of Ski Journalists (AIJS) .

His best slalom result in the World Cup also dates back to 1999, a third place in the Wengen slalom, which is particularly remarkable in how he achieved it: he got stuck with his ski at the start and backed through the first gate.

Kjus is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play .
