Atle Skårdal (born February 17, 1966 in Lunde , Telemark ) is a former Norwegian ski racer . The specialist in the fast downhill and super-G disciplines has twice been world champion in super-G and has won seven world cup races .
biography
Skårdal was world champion in Super-G at the 1996 World Ski Championships in the Sierra Nevada . He was able to successfully defend this title the following year at the 1997 World Ski Championships in Sestriere . Before that, he had already won the silver medal behind Swiss Urs Lehmann at the 1993 World Ski Championships in Morioka . In the World Cup , Skårdal scored seven victories in downhill and super-G races between 1990 and 1995. In the 1995/96 season he won the individual World Cup in the Super-G. In 1990 he won the election for Norway's Sportsman of the Year .
After the 1996/97 season Skårdal ended his career. From 2000 to 2005 he was the trainer of the Norwegian national ski team. Since then he has been employed as race director for the women's world cup races at the International Ski Federation FIS until June 2, 2019; he was replaced by Peter Gerdol . His nomination was announced on March 7, 2005; he replaced the Austrian Kurt Hoch , who had held this post since 1991.
Skårdal is married to the former Austrian ski racer Karin Köllerer . The couple has three children.
