The 35th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from February 2 to 14, 1999 in the winter sports resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek in the US state of Colorado .

Worth mentioning

  • The men's speed competitions including the combination downhill run took place in Beever Creak, while the women and all other men's races including the combination slalom were held in Vail.
  • The "Birds of Prey" had been redesigned by Bernhard Russi and in December 1997 the first men's World Cup races took place there.
  • For the first time there was an ex-aequo placement in first place at an Alpine World Ski Championships ( Lasse Kjus and Hermann Maier in the Super-G).
  • Lasse Kjus was the star of this championship, because he could not only win two gold medals, but one medal in all races.
  • The women’s team of the ÖSV managed to achieve an entire podium twice (actually the first four places in the downhill), which so far only the German selection in downhill and combination had succeeded in the women's world championships in 1938, as it was otherwise only with the "weaker sex" 1937 (Slalom) and 1939 (Downhill) for Germany (or the German Reich) and 1964 (Downhill) for Austria this complete set of medals.

In terms of 5 gold medals as well as a total of 13 medals, it was the second most successful world championships for Austria after 1962 in the history of all world championships (as of April 2017).

  • As in 1989, Italy could not win a medal on the slopes in Vail and Beaver Creek.
  • The German Ski Association went without a medal for the first time since 1982.
  • Twice, tiny things were decisive for Hans Knauß : in the Super-G it was a hundredth that he was missing on gold - and it was two hundredths in the downhill, which meant he had to take a seat next to the podium in fourth.
  • For the first time ever there was a "big" victory for Finland with the gold medal in the men's slalom by Kalle Palander , because neither in the World Cup nor in all the years before 1967 this was the case in more important competitions. The gold medal for Australia in women's slalom was also a novelty, but the winner Zali Steggall had already won a World Cup slalom (November 23, 1997) and a slalom bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Nagano last year, and she had already won two World Cups for men ( and departure bronze 1970).
  • On ORF -TV, both the women's and men's downhill runs had a reach of 68%, but 2.141 million viewers watched the four-fold success of the women and "only" 2.031 million the victory of Hermann Maier. (In contrast, the women's slalom was only shown with a time delay so that the first run was shown as a summary.)
  • Sonja Nef's sponsor came up with a gag regarding her 11th place in the giant slalom when he announced in the following newspaper advertisements that the audience would have had the runner in the picture longer because of this "delay".
