The Birds of Prey (dt. Birds of prey ) is a ski run in the Beaver Creek Resort in Vail in US -Bundesstaat Colorado . On it were downhill and Super-G of the Alpine World Skiing Championships in 1999 and 2015 discharged. It is also the venue for World Cup races every year . The slope is considered to be very demanding - the descent is one of the most difficult in the World Cup , along with the Pista Stelvio in Bormio and the Streif in Kitzbühel .

history

The bird of prey slope was designed by Bernhard Russi in the summer of 1997 for the 1999 Alpine World Ski Championships. In the first race of these championships, the Super-G, Lasse Kjus and Hermann Maier became world champions at the same time. The third, Hans Knauß , was only 1/100 of a second behind. Maier won the descent ahead of Kjus and Kjetil André Aamodt . The latter won the combination , the descent of which was also held on the Birds of Prey , ahead of Kjus and Paul Accola . The other competitions took place in neighboring Vail. Lasse Kjus was the only skier in history to win medals in all five disciplines (gold in giant slalom and super-G and silver in downhill, slalom and combined).

Since the 1997/98 season , Beaver Creek has established itself with the Birds of Prey as an annual host of World Cup races. These are usually driven in late November or early December. In addition to downhill runs and super-G, World Cup giant slaloms , slaloms and super combinations have also taken place on the bird of prey slope . The most successful athlete (including the 2018 races) is Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal , who achieved 6 wins, 4 second places and 5 third places. The closest to him are the American Ted Ligety (5-3-2) and the Austrian Marcel Hirscher (4-3-4). In 2009 Carlo Janka won three victories in three different disciplines within three days at the Birds of Prey as only the second athlete in the history of the World Cup (the first was the French Jean-Claude Killy , who was in Franconia from March 10th to 12th, 1967 Downhill, slalom and giant slalom won).

On December 7, 2011, a women's World Cup race took place on the Birds of Prey for the first time : Lindsey Vonn won a Super-G, which could not be carried out in the criterion of the first snow in Val d'Isère .

Winner lists men
