biography

Scheiber lives in St. Jakob in Defereggen and graduated from the ski school in Stams . He came to the ski club in his hometown very early and was soon accepted into the team of the Tyrolean Ski Association. As a 15-year-old, he competed in his first FIS races in November 1998 . Scheiber developed into a good all-rounder. In 2000 he was three-time Austrian youth champion (downhill, super-G and slalom) in his age group and then accepted into the junior squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). In January 2001 it was used for the first time in the European Cup at the races in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee , but was still far from the points. Three weeks later he finished twelfth in the slalom at the 2001 Junior World Championships . After further European Cup races without points in January and February 2002, Scheiber won the silver medal in the downhill at the 2002 Junior World Championships and thus made it to the B-team of the ÖSV.

In the 2002/03 season , Scheiber already achieved several top 10 placements in the European Cup. On February 19, he was third on the podium for the first time in the downhill from Tarvisio . A little later he won the gold medal in the giant slalom and bronze in the Super-G at the 2003 Junior World Championships at the same time as the Swiss Daniel Albrecht . As a junior world champion, he was able to start in the World Cup for the first time at the season finale in Hafjell , but he was eliminated in the second round of the giant slalom. Scheiber became Austrian Super-G Champion at the end of March 2003 and was promoted to the ÖSV-A squad after this winter. He celebrated his first victory in the European Cup on December 18, 2003 in the Downhill on the Tonale Pass and with three more podium places in the 2003/04 season, he was fifth in the overall standings and third in the downhill and Super-G classifications, placing him in secured a place in the World Cup for these disciplines next winter.

In the third World Cup race of the 2004/05 season , Scheiber was third in the Super-G at Beaver Creek for the first time on the podium. In February and March, two second places followed in the runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Kvitfjell . At the end of winter, he was able to place himself in the top ten in both the Downhill and Super G World Cups. After the opening of the glacier in Sölden at the beginning of the 2005/06 season, Scheiber was seriously injured on November 13, 2005 during giant slalom training in Sun Peaks . He suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee and had to take a break for the rest of the winter. In his second World Cup race in the 2006/07 season , the Super-G in Lake Louise , Scheiber was back on the podium. In December he reached two third places in the two downhill runs from Bormio and in March he was second again in the Super-G from Kvitfjell. He also achieved top 10 results in the giant slalom and the super combined, which brought him ninth place in the overall World Cup and the Downhill World Cup as well as fourth place in the Super G World Cup. As a possible medal contender at the 2007 World Championships in Åre, however, after finishing eighth in the downhill and eleventh in the Super-G, he was left empty-handed.

In the 2007/08 World Cup season , Scheiber achieved three podium positions: He was second in the Super-G in Beaver Creek and in the Downhill from Kitzbühel and was third in the Super-G in Kitzbühel. On March 6, 2008, his 25th birthday, he seriously injured his left shoulder during giant slalom training in Maria Alm . After an operation, he had to end the season early. Due to another injury, the following season 2008/09 was already over for Scheiber after only three races: On November 30, 2008 in the Super-G of Lake Louise he suffered cartilage and meniscus damage in his knee without a fall and was unable to do so because of persistent injuries Pain in the rest of the winter not to participate in any further races.

Scheiber made his third comeback in the World Cup on October 25, 2009 in Sölden in the first giant slalom of the 2009/10 season . After things hadn't gone as planned in the first races of the winter and he had suffered cartilage damage in his left knee during downhill training in Beaver Creek , he finished second on the podium on December 19 on the downhill in Val Gardena . Ten days later he again set the second fastest time in the downhill from Bormio , but was disqualified because he was standing too high in his ski boot. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , Scheiber came fourth in the downhill and missed a medal by twelve hundredths of a second. At the World Cup final in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished second on the downhill again on the podium. He finished fifth in both the Downhill and Super G World Cups.

The 2010/11 season began Scheiber with a second place in the downhill of Lake Louise, followed by other top 5 results. On January 27, 2011, he had a serious fall during downhill training on the La Verte slope in Chamonix . Scheiber suffered a broken nasal bone and a nasal sinus fracture as well as a broken right collarbone and again had to end the season prematurely. After being unable to take part in the North American races at the beginning of next winter due to back pain, he made his new comeback on December 16, 2011 with ninth place in the Super-G in Val Gardena - his 100th World Cup race. Due to increasing pain in his right knee, he was only once among the fastest 20 in the remainder of the 2011/12 season . On March 12, 2012, Scheiber announced his retirement from alpine ski racing due to health problems.

Scheiber has been a member of the Austrian Ski Association's coaching staff since summer 2013 and looks after the women's European Cup team.
