Fotheringay

Fotheringay was a British folk rock band founded by Sandy Denny in 1970 after leaving the Fairport Convention .

The band consisted of:

• Sandy Denny: vocals, piano, acoustic guitar
• Trevor Lucas : vocals, acoustic and electric guitar
• Jerry Donahue : lead guitar, choral singing
• Gerry Conway : drums, choir singing
• Pat Donaldson : bass, choral singing
• Linda Peters , Tod Lloyd : Choral Singing

The band name was borrowed from the melancholy ballad Fotheringay by Sandy Denny, which she had released with Fairport Convention in 1969 on the album What We Did on Our Holidays . Its text is about the captivity and imminent execution of the Scottish Queen Mary Queen of Scots at Fotheringhay Castle .

Musically, the album offered mature folk and rock songs with occasional country or blues borrowings. In 1971, while working on a second album, the band broke up and Sandy Denny started a solo career on the advice of the band member and her future husband Trevor Lucas. It wasn't until September 2008, 30 years after Sandy Denny's death in 1978, that the second album, Fotheringay 2, was released . Jerry Donahue had put it together from the original recordings of the planned second album.
