Jerry Donahue
Jerry Donahue (born September 24, 1946 in Manhattan , New York City ) is an American guitarist. As a member of the bands Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, he had a major impact on the British folk scene. He became particularly well-known in Germany through his appearances on the SWR show Ohne Filter with the guitar trio The Hellecasters . He is also involved as a producer.
Life and influences
Donahue's father is Sam Donahue , a well-known big band saxophonist, his mother Patricia Donahue was an actress. Donahue grew up in Los Angeles, where he took his first guitar lessons and, above all, got an insight into the local music scene through his father's contacts. When he was 14, he saw Gerry McGee play in a Hollywood music club . The behind-the-nut-bendig technique he used fascinated the young Donahue so much that he asked McGee for guitar lessons. The The Ventures guitarist continues to influence next to Amos Garrett 's style Donahue. He also mentions Chet Atkins , Duane Eddy , The Shadows and The Ventures as early influences. Clarence White , Danny Gatton , Albert Lee , Tommy Emmanuel and Robben Ford joined them later .
After his parents divorced, Donahue moved to England with his mother. Musically, he found a new home in the emerging folk rock scene and played in the bands Poet and the One Man Band , Fotheringay and Fairport Convention . He also played with musical greats such as Joan Armatrading , Gerry Rafferty , Robert Plant , Elton John , The Proclaimers , Mick Greenwood , Johnny Hallyday , Gary Wright , Cliff Richard , Chris Rea , Warren Zevon , Bonnie Raitt , Hank Marvin , Roy Orbison , Nanci Griffith , The Beach Boys and The Yardbirds .
He achieved cult status through the band The Hellecasters with Will Ray and John Jorgenson .
In 2009 Donahue founded the band Gathering - Legends of Folk Rock together with Clive Bunker , Rick Kemp , Ray Jackson , Doug Morter and his daughter Kristina Donahue .
After a time in Hamburg, Donahue is now back in Los Angeles. He played a major role in the revival of the band Fotheringay and the creation of the tour in June 2015.
techniques
Donahue is known among guitarists for his bending technique, which he perfected and which is still his trademark today. Danny Gatton is said to have called Donahue the "string-bender king of the planet".
Equipment
Over the years Donahue has developed various signature guitars with well-known instrument manufacturers, including 1997 with Fender , 2005 with Peavey and currently with Fret King Black Label.
producer
Donahue also works as a producer. In 1998 he produced the song "Gold Dust" for singer Sandy Denny , and in 2004 he brought out the song "Instinct" by The Animals . In 2008 he completed Fotheringay's second album .
