Franconia on the Franconia fountain

Franconia (the Latinized expression for Franconia ) is the feminine symbolic figure and secular patroness of Franconia and represents the personified allegory for this region. It is comparable to Bavaria for the Free State of Bavaria or Borussia for Prussia .

An outstanding pictorial representation of Franconia can be found on the Frankonia Fountain , built in 1894, in front of the Würzburg Residence . It shows a woman in armor and a warrior's coat, crowned with a ducal hat, in her left hand the “ racing flag ” of the Würzburg monastery . The right hand is stretched out in a grand gesture.

On the Würzburg four-tube fountain (Beim Grafeneckart), which was designed by Balthasar Neumann in 1727 and executed jointly by Jacob von der Auvera and Johann Peter Wagner, first donated water on 23 August 1733 and was completed in 1766, the Frankonia stands above the fountain's obelisk with ducal sword and racing flag . Above the fountain bowl, the four virtues bravery ( Fortitudo ) , prudence ( Prudentia ) , temperance ( Temperantia ) and justice ( Justitia ) are depicted. Balthasar Neumann established the fresh water supply for Würzburg for the first time with a canal system to this well.
