Frankonia Fountain

The Frankonia Fountain , originally called Luitpold Fountain or Prince Regent Luitpold Fountain , is a fountain on Residenzplatz west of the Würzburg Residence in Würzburg, Lower Franconia . It is one such castle, forecourt and Court since 1981 for the World Heritage Site of UNESCO . It is registered under the monument number D-6-63-000-457 as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list. The fountain in neo-baroque style was architecturally designed by Gabriel von Seidl , the bronze sculptures come from the sculptor and ore caster Ferdinand von Miller .

The wrought-iron courtyard grille was located where the fountain is today . This was canceled in 1821 after Würzburg fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814 . In 1894 the Frankonia Fountain was built by the city of Würzburg in honor of the Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria and unveiled on June 3, 1894 in the presence of the Prince Regent.

The fountain has a fountain bowl with a central base and a crowning bronze statue, which represents Frankonia , the allegory of Franconia . The Frankonia wears armor and warrior cloak and is crowned with the ducal hat . In her left hand she carries the little racing flag , which is also in the Würzburg city flag, the right hand is outstretched in a grand gesture. The statue is surrounded by the stone base figures of the poet Walther von der Vogelweide , the painter Matthias Grünewald and the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider and looks out over the cathedral.

The Kiliansbrunnen, inaugurated on July 8, 1895 by Prince Regent Luitpold as a counterpart to the Frankonia Fountain, stands in front of the Würzburg Central Station .
