Hans-Peter Baum (* 1943 in Stettin ) is a German economic historian and for many years was director of the Würzburg “Documentation Center for Jewish History and Culture in Lower Franconia”.

Life

Baum studied at the universities of Marburg and Hamburg from 1962 and graduated in 1969 with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools in English and history . In 1973 he moved to the University of Würzburg as a research assistant . In 1976 his dissertation on the Hamburg bond market ( mortgage loans ) was published between 1371 and 1410.

In Würzburg he mainly researched the fiefdom of the Hochstift Würzburg from 1302 to 1519, whereby the sources - still unusual at the time - were evaluated using electronic data processing . This data later formed the basis of the database on the social and economic history of the Middle Ages on the “Historisches Unterfranken” internet portal . He also published numerous articles on craft professions in the " Lexicon of the Middle Ages ".

His habilitation for the Würzburger Lehenhof was completed in 1990. In the same year he was granted an academic license to teach at the University of Würzburg and has since been a private lecturer at the chair for Franconian regional history .

From its founding in 1987 to 2008, i.e. for more than 20 years, he headed the “Documentation Center for Jewish History and Culture in Lower Franconia” as a research assistant at the Würzburg City Archives , renamed “Johanna-Stahl-Zentrum” in April 2011, and published numerous Writings on the Jewish history of Lower Franconia .
