Matteo Marsaglia (born October 5, 1985 in Rome ) is an Italian ski racer and sports soldier . He is particularly successful in the disciplines of combination and super-G . His sister Francesca Marsaglia , who is four years younger than him, is also a ski racer.

biography

Marsaglia contested his first FIS races in November 2000 and started in the European Cup in February 2003. It took until December 21, 2007 for him to finish in the top ten for the first time in the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee super combination , a month later he reached the first European Cup podium in the super combination of Sarntal / Reinswald . He celebrated his first European Cup victory on February 25, 2009 in the super combined from Tarvisio .

Marsaglia made his debut in the World Cup on February 3, 2008 in the Super Combined in Val-d'Isère , where he reached 16th place and thus won World Cup points straight away. This was his only result in the top 30 for over two years, until he was able to score for the second time on December 17th, 2010 as the 25th of the Super-G in Val Gardena . In the 2009/10 season he was only able to take part in one European Cup race due to injury. From mid-January 2011 Marsaglia consistently scored points in the World Cup and his results improved significantly. With ninth place in the combination of Kitzbühel and seventh place in the downhill from Kvitfjell , he achieved his first top 10 results. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished 15th in the Super-G.

In the 2011/12 season Marsaglia drove into the top 5 for the first time with two fourth places in the Super Combined by Krasnaja Poljana and in the Super G of Schladming . On December 1, 2012, he celebrated his only one so far in the Super G of Beaver Creek World cup victory. Two weeks later, a second place in the Super-G of Val Gardena was added. Finally, he finished second in the discipline ranking. He managed to do this despite an inguinal hernia that he suffered over the winter and only had an operation after the end of the 2012/13 season . Due to various minor injuries, he did not manage to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics. He achieved the best result of the 2013/14 World Cup season in early March with 9th place in the Super-G at Kvitfjell .

Massaglia achieved three top 10 placings in the 2014/15 World Cup , but he was plagued by back problems. After finishing sixth in the downhill from Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 30, 2016, he fell eight days later in Jeongseon's Super-G and suffered adductor injuries and severe bruises, which meant that he had to end the season prematurely. Athletes spokesman Hannes Reichelt then strongly criticized the FIS medical emergency concept , which was completely inadequate. During training in Chile , Massaglia fell badly at the end of September 2016 and tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee, which meant he missed the entire 2016/17 season. In the winter of 2017/18 he finished in the World Cup points twice, his best result was 20th place in the Super-G at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
